I couldn't believe a paper on Sunday, in New York, cost me $4. Maybe I'm used to seeing Readers for free. That makes throwing down four bucks for a newspaper just seem insane.
I was reading it on the plane. And, I came across an article about Hummers. In case you aren't sure what those are, or are thinking of something else...I'm talking about the SUV's that were original made for the Army. And at some point, much to Ed Beagley Jr's chagrin, the public fell in love with them.
The story echoed the same thing a newscaster said a few days earlier. That they are probably going to start selling fewer of them since gas prices are up.
Now, why do two different news agencies not have a clue?
Seriously. When gas was $3 a gallon, was that the determining factor in someone buying one of those mamoth machines?
I don't know what the price of Hummers is. I'm guessing around $100,000. So, if you're spending that type of money, yeah, it probably doesn't bother you that it is getting 10 miles per gallon. Sure, it probably bothers you to have to fill it up 30 times on the way to Big Bear...
I remember reading years ago, that Lambourgini's got 12 miles per gallon. Yet, I'm not reading about them during these high gas prices. Or people that own yachts.
Sure, I have to believe SUV sales have gone down. Because, a lot of the people that owned them are families that liked the size of the vehicle. And, it kept soccer moms that used to have mini vans, feeling more hip. Or, it was the one vehicle both husband and wife could agree on.
I glanced threw an interview with Sheryl Crowe in a music magazine I got recently. She talked about people buying SUV's, and how they should bike to work.
And, I remembered how when she played Copley Symphony Hall downtown, there were four 18-wheelers. They had band equipment, merchandise she was selling at the show, etc etc etc.
I'd love to ask her why she's not rolling up in a Prius.
