I love New York. The shows, the deli's....and stop telling me about D.Z. Akin's. It's so overrated. Yeah, sure, it might be the best in the San Diego area. But so what.
Stew, not the crazed baby from Family Guy, but the singer/songwriter genius of the group "The Negro Problem" has a play on Broadway. I'm stoked about seeing it.
It's great that the guy that once played shows at Java Joes for 8 people (including me and Bart Mendoza), now has a show that's attended by people like Diana Ross and Spike Lee.
Whoopi Goldberg even wore one of his T-shirts the other day that said "Passing Strange." She then had him perform a song from it the following week.
A funny story on the Broadway/play front.
I heard some people talking about that goofy Mama Mia and how it's been made into a movie. I saw the horrible looking commercial for it when I was talked into seeing Sex and the City (liked the show, didn't like the movie).
Anyway, these people started talking about how a future play on Broadway will be about Bruce Lee. Now, Brenda Lee, maybe. But Bruce? Will he be singing into Nunchucks?
It's going to be titled: Bruce Lee -- Journey to the West. It won't be showing until 2010.
It's going to be directed by Bartlett Sher, who is currently getting props for reviving South Pacific.
The only thing interesting about this, is that the score is going to be done by David Yazbeck. I had no clue who Yazbeck was, until a few years back when one of my editors at the Reader gave me a CD with his stuff.
He wrote the music and lyrics for The Full Monty, and also Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which got its start here in San Diego. And his songs are great.
I checked online to see what info I could find on the music. One thing I read said it will be a mix of Chinese opera and pop music.
