I've been asked my opinion on the cross atop Mount Soledad. Okay, well, that's kind of an exaggeration. I have been asked. But only a few times over the last year. Among my friends, nobody cares all that much about it.
I have an opinion on it. And, really, it's the only opinion that's right. And, it's an opinion that's going to tick people off. Because, as I've said before, people are stupid. They really are.
There are two things about the cross. First, the person that was the atheist, that initially sued because he was "offended" by it, was full of crap. He wasn't "offended". The lawsuit, to me, was lame.
But, before all you atheists get all upset...let me tick off the religious folks with this next line.
All you Christians and Catholics, and any other religion I'm forgetting -- if you try to say "This isn't a religious symbol." Well, you're being idiotic. It's a huge cross. Of course it's a religious symbol.
If you try to say you don't understand why it bothers people, well, you are also idiotic. If you don't understand, you might have an IQ below 100.
It bothers people because it is public land. Nobody has ever had a problem with a church having their cross high atop the roof of their building.
And, don't try to tell me that the land was sold. It doesn't count when there is a sale for $10,000 or some low amount, that isn't a real sale.
If it isn't a religious symbol, why is it shaped like....oh...A CROSS!?!?!??!!
Maybe if you cut off the horizontal section, and had one big monolith, like something from 2001. Or from The Who album "Who's Next," then you can say it's not a religious symbol.
Would these Christians and Catholics be so supportive of a big Star of David? Or what about a pentagram? Or a crescent moon, or [insert other religious symbol here].
Everyone tries to say it's for soldiers. Well, that sounds wonderful. But, I've read in the paper from the families of Jewish soldiers, that don't feel it represents them too well.
Now, to give full disclosure, my moms side of the family is Jewish. I've never stepped foot inside a synagogue. Never had a barmitvah. I wore a yammika (I'm spelling all these words wrong too, aren't I?) once at my cousins wedding.
If you would've asked me 20 years ago, if I wanted the cross to stay or go, I would've said keep it. It's been up there for so long, it's a part of San Diego, it's a landmark, yadda yadda yadda.
If you ask me now, I think it should go. Mostly because, the hardcore religious types, don't understand. As usual.
Now, I'd love nothing more than to see some hardcore Christian suggest they slap a Star of David in the middle of it. And, maybe some other religions symbols on the arms of the cross. We can make it a symbol that has all the other religions on it. I've seen a few bumper stickers that do that. I forget the word they use. I'm sure I could think of it if I tried. But it's late.
Anyway, if I hear another Catholic or Christian say the wrong thing about the cross, I'm going to go off on them. I'd prefer they say "Yeah, I can see it being offensive to some. I mean, it's a huge cross, which is our symbol. But I sure hope it stays."
If I hear atheists say they're offended by it, I might ask them why they are "offended". It's the same way they complain that religious folks listen to Howard Stern, just so they can complain to the FCC that they are "offended" by something he says, when they can merely change the channel.
If you're offended, you don't have to look at it. You don't have to visit it on Easter morning.
