Getting Punk'd

An NBA player had a prank pulled on him.

I watch the show Punk'd whenever I'm going thru the channels, and nothing else is on. I think Ashton Kutcher is a bit of a dweeb, trying way too hard to be hip and funny. But, the idea of a Candid Camera type of show that works on celebrities, is genius.

I have a few friends that think this premise is horrible. I'm not sure why. When the fake IRS agents were at Justin Timberlake's house, and had all his furniture outside, he was in tears calling his mom, asking what to do. The kicker was his signed autographed Beatles guitar, which a guy driving a truck pretended to break (it was a fake one, but from far away, he couldn't tell).

At a party, I met an assistant director on the show. I told him I was surprised no rapper has pulled out a gun and shot someone. He told me a few times, they have. Those episodes never aired (if they EVER have DVDs with that footage, I'll be all over it).

In the latest Sports Illustrated, there was a prank someone did that wasn't cool.

In Los Angeles, Phoenix Suns guard Leandro Barbosa was at his hotel, and received a call that told him to meet GM Steve Kerr in the lobby, because he had been traded to the Knicks. He was in tears, as he went to the lobby, searching for front office folks.

After an hour, he came across assistant coach Dan D'Antoni, who assured Barbosa that the call must've been a prank. And also told him he needs to use someone else's name when checking into a hotel. He said, "If someone told me to come down to the front desk and pick up a million dollars, do you think I'd start running for the elevator?"

A good point, but there's a difference between the two scenarios.

I remember as a teenager, reading Pat Riley's book, and he said the Lakers, when playing the Celtics in the championships, would get a lot of crank calls. And, at 4:00 a.m. a fire alarm. This made it hard for them to go back to sleep, before a big championship game.

Now, as much as I love Punk'd, and those old Candid Camera shows...I do think pulling a prank at a hotel should be off limits.

Although, now that I'm thinking about it...when Kobe Bryant got into trouble in that Colorado Hotel, maybe he should've just tried to convince his wife he was Punk'd. Instead, he bought her an 8 million dollar diamond.

To each their own.
