You always hear about how hard divorce is on the kids.
Well, here's a story that takes that to new levels.
In Portland, a 12-year-old boy is in between a wicked dispute. The reason? The father converted to Judaism in 2004 and wants the boy to be circumcised as part of the faith. The mother appealed to the high court, saying the operation could harm her son physically and psychologically.
Now....this story delves into two of my pet peeves. One, is divorced parents not thinking about what is best for their kids. Two, religion making people do stupid things. And, don't kid yourself. Whatever religion you practice, I guarantee it has some stupid things you follow. Whether it means you aren't eating bacon, or you go door-to-door to try to convert others, or you're forced to sit thru bad Tom Cruise movies.
If this man wanted to convert to Judaism, fine. He can avoid bacon. He can go to temple. He can grow a beard and listen to ZZ Top songs. Whatever he wants. And, if he has a brand new, bouncing baby boy, with a new Jewish wife...fine. Argue with her about circumcision. But a 12-year-old boy? Is this guy that insane?
And, what do the doctors even say about this? I remember reading years ago, that if you don't do this when the child is a baby, it's very painful.
Currently, the Supreme Court is trying to find out if it's what the boy wants (the dad says it is, the mom says it isn't). If, in fact, the boy doesn't want a surgery involving his penis (as I'm guessing), then the father should be charged with some crime, for lying to the court. I guarantee, he won't be.
And, this 12-year-old has been dealing with angry parents for a while. A custody dispute began when the kid was four. The circumcision issue came about when he was nine.
The boys father is a lawyer, and representing himself. He better be careful, because if he does things the wrong way, it could hurt his practice.
