There are so many problems with rap music, I don't even want to get into them all.
But when I heard about this story, I couldn't stop laughing. Just like, well, he couldn't stop rapping.
You see, the genre has a long history of boasting in the lyrics. One element I always found strange is...they create a rap name. Some, like Eminem, goes by his real name, Marshall Mathers. He also goes by Slim Shady (since he gained 75 pounds, maybe he'll change that to "Heavy Shady").
And, the Beastie Boys, they have names like MCA, Ad Rock, and Mike D, yet they then say their real names thru out their raps. I wonder...why create the moniker, when you're going to then name check yourself?
But, a former Oceanside rapper, who goes by Trump (I'm assuming that's a reference to Donald Trumps cash, not his hair style). His real name is Bryan Dammon Smith, which sounds nothing like Trump. If that was my name, I'd go with Dammon Smith & Wesson -- like the gun.
He wrote a few raps about crimes he committed, including a few robberies at North County businesses. One being a gun he stole in Oceanside. Another was a bank in Vista he boosted.
And, to help prosecutors along...he gave specifics about the crimes, including locations of the businesses.
One of the sample lyrics: Who got a gun dat Trump can go steal?/Creep down Mission, corner of Hill.
He's now on trial for shooting the owner of a market. Of course, the defense lawyers are telling the jury there is no evidence that puts him inside the market. But, prosecutors aren't stupid. They aren't trying the case based on lyrics alone. They have a bullet from the scene, that matched his gun.
Oh yeah, Trump also told his wife and friends about the robbery and shooting.
Now, all I'm thinking...is how it's a shame that O.J.'s attorney Johnnie Cochran died. I mean, he so cleverly came up with "If the gloves don't fit/you must acquit," in his closing arguments. He'd be able to come up with an entire closing argument rap, using his defendant to help him write it.
