Well, I wasn't surprised that No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood, led the pack with 8 nominations each. Both of them were highly overrated, but critically praised. I have no problem with Daniel Day-Lewis being nominated for best actor in Blood. He'll win, too.
Other Best Picture nominees include Atonement, which I didn't see (ha! no woman forced me to go). Juno, which I enjoyed, but thought it tried too hard to be clever and could've worked better scaling back a bit. And, I have no problem with the lead actress, Ellen Page getting nominated. Sure, she played the character she is in real life, but if you see her in Hard Candy from last year, you'll realize...this kid has some talent.
Michael Clayton was the other Best Picture nominee. A good film, but stuff you've seen before. And, Clooney was great in the role, although he could've done that character in his sleep (a lawyer yearning for something more, has a gambling problem, etc.)
I won $20 for Hal Holbrook gettting nominated for Best Supporting Actor, for the long and boring Into the Wild. He was great in it, and you get sad watching him on screen. He was just in town for the opening of the Balboa Theatre at Horton Plaza, doing Mark Twain Tonight! It would've been great to thank him for winning me some money.
Other Supporting Actors were Javier Bardem, who is best known as Penelope Cruz's boyfriend. He should've been nominated for Best Haircut. He's also a shoe-in for the Oscar. Casey Affleck, and Tom Wilkinson got nominations...but I liked Philip Seymour Hoffman in Charlie Wilson's War the best of the bunch. Maybe he should've gotten a nomination for Best Mustache. Although, now that I think about it...Daniel Day-Lewis would've won that, too.
