I was really happy with how the Oscars went down last night. First...I loved the fact that there were only a few political jokes, by host Jon Stewart. And, they didn't favor any one side. Nothing I hate worse than listening to an idiot like Richard Gere, that probably knows less about foreign affairs than anyone, go on and on after winning an award. Or worse, merely being a presenter.
I thought it was great that Julie Christie didn't win. She was favored. But, the woman who played Edith Paif in Le Vie En Rose, truely deserved it. That performance was the best of the year. Perhaps the best I've ever seen in a bio-pic (sorry John C. Reily fans...yes, he was good in Dewey Cox, but...)
I did think that Tilda Swindon (sp?) should not have won for Michael Clayton. She played an angry lawyer. Big deal. Now, some may say, that's all George Clooney played. But he had to show a little range in that role. He had a gambling problem, family problems, and obviously, some work problems. It was a nice performance. But, for Tilda to win it over that actress from Gone Baby Gone, who had to play a white trash gal from Boston...that was a role she sunk her teeth into.
I thought it was cool that Jerry Seinfeld did a bit with his bee character, especially considering his Bee Movie didn't get a nomination in the animated movie category.
I enjoyed the movie "Once". And, it was a touching moment when Jon Stewart brought the singer out to give her acceptance speech, after she had been cut off by the music.
Although, I thought it would've been better had she ended it, thanking Javier Bardem's mother in Spanish.
Why can't they ever go for humor in their acceptance speeches? I understand you want to thank your drama coach from 8th grade and the assistant director, and craft services....but give us a few jokes, at least. It's a long show.
