I saw on the news that a biker died after a driver made an illegal U-turn into his path.
Often times, when this happens, no charges are filed. Unless the person was going over 100 mph, the authorities just feel like "accidents happen," and that there's no need to charge the driver. Why? It's vehicular manslaughter.
I think, even if it's a little fender bender, the police should get to the scene and charge the one that caused the accident. I know, I know...I'm going to hear that since the officer didn't witness it, he can't decide who is at fault.
Well, it screws up traffic for everyone. And, I got a ticket the other day when I made a left turn downtown. Nobody was behind me. No on-coming traffic. But, all the signs on Broadway were saying I couldn't turn left. I did it safely, and this officer not only gives me the ticket, he lectures me for 10 minutes. If I would've known I was still getting the ticket, I would've said "Shut up, stop wasting my time, and just give me the citation so I can be on my way." But, I listened to his BS, thinking maybe he'll then give me a warning.
And, I say "BS" because it was. When he asked why I would make such a stupid turn, I said it was safe. He then jumped up and down (literally) and said "Would it be safe to go the wrong way on the freeway?" I said "Of course not. But, there's always traffic on the freeway." He then replied, "Well, what if the freeway was empty, I guess, according to you, it would be safe then." I said, "Uh, well, no. I'm not sure your analogy is working. Because I didn't drive down the wrong way of a one-way street. I just made a left turn where I wasn't supposed to." He seemed to get madder and madder, so I let him rant, before saying "Yeah, you're right. It wasn't safe."
I know this is horrible, but I've seen those videos of cops standing on the road, and being hit by another vehicle. When this officer was jumping up and down and lecturing me, I would've loved to see a car side-swipe him.
