A few things on CNN Headline News today, that got me thinking about the law. Okay, who am I kidding, I'm always thinking about it. For some reason, I'm fascinated by all the crap that goes on with our legal system.
But, these were weirder, more fun stories.
One had to do with a guy that got drunk on an airplane. He started beating his wife up (allegedly) when they got off the plane. He was arrested.
He then turned around and sued the airline, for giving him the alcohol in which to get tanked.
Believe me, I'd love nothing more than to have anyone that hits a woman, do some serious jail time. Aside from you just being a pyscho if you do that...look at all the cases like O.J. They start as wife beaters, and move it up to murder (allegedly).
So I'd love this guy to go down for this, but in a way, I think he has a bit of a point. I know from talking to various bartenders and bar owners, that they will be cited, if they serve someone alcohol that is drunk. This always surprises people that aren't familiar with this law. The fact that a bar (a place many go to get drunk), is technically not allowed to let you get drunk.
Using this logic, airplanes should have to follow the same rules. Of course, they'll be able to get out of it. The flight attendant will say he/she didn't notice he was intoxicated, or they would've cut him off.
The other story was when I switched channels. It was some lowrider show called "Living the Low Life." It was fun watching this old Latino that is well known for customizing interiors to these cars (which always seem to remind me of brothels).
One guy was talking about the awards his car has won, and he said "I have cops pulling me over sometimes just to look at my car."
Now, I met a few guys at a party that had lowriders. And they told me the same thing.
I met a few people at car shows that also talked about this. And it got me thinking.
If you own a classic car, hot rod, or lowrider, there's nothing more flattering than to have someone compliment you on it.
But we all know the feeling we get when we see those blue-and-red lights come on behind us.
Imagine seeing those lights, getting worried, and pulling over. You wonder if any of your friends left a roach in your car. You start to look for your registration in the glove box. And, the knock on your window startles you.
As you roll down the window the officer says, "You weren't doing anything wrong, I just wanted to check out your car. I love the glittery purple, and the big busted woman painted on your hood."
Sure, the cop is giving a compliment. But what if you were running late for something? What would happen if you said, "Listen officer, I appreciate the kind words, but are you an idiot? Aren't there criminals out there you should be after? Instead, you waste my time pulling me over to talk about my car. It's one thing if I was in a parking lot, but I'm driving. I'm on my way somewhere. Don't waste my time, or the other taxpayers, just because you want to chit-chat. Good day!"
(at this point, you drive off, possibly squeeling the wheels...wait, scratch two things. Making noise with the wheels is a violation known as "exhibition of speed." And, saying "good day" is something no one in a lowrider probably says).
Would the officer take offense and pull you back over? Would he suspect that, since you were in such a hurry to leave, surely you had something to hide? Could you report him, and would it be worth your time? Surely the officer wouldn't get in trouble. After all, I'm sure his superiors probably want more of their officers to get along with the community and law-abiding citizens.
