Jay Leno has been coming under fire for a comment he made when he had actor Ryan Phillippe on his show.
Here is what surprised me about that. I don't think Leno is all that funny, so when I'm home at that time, I watch Letterman, and only go to Leno during commercials.
Doing that works well (aside from them often having commercials at the same time). Once, I saw Harry Shearer on Leno, talking about me!!!
But, that's a different story.
I saw Leno the other day, with one of the black ladies from the view (not Whoopie or Star Jones, the other). She was upset, that the new View coffee mugs showed her with a gap in her teeth. Leno laughed and said, "If I was you, I'd be more made that they made you white."
Just then, the camera shows a close up of the mug, and all the women, in cartoon carictures on it, are in fact, white.
She laughed, as did the crowd. My girlfriend and I looked at each other and said, "Wow. I wonder if he'll get into trouble for saying that."
We didn't know that he would get in trouble for that show. But, it was for something completely different.
In the Ryan interview, Leno talked about a gay character he played in an early film. Leno said things like "That must've made your parents really proud."
He also said, "Look into that camera there, and show us your gayiest face."
Ryan was uncomfortable. The crowd was laughing. But, lots of people were upset by the comments. One gay publication asked if Leno would say to a Jewish star "Show us your Jewishiest face."
Although, I had more fun reading magazines that got things wrong. One said that when Leno said, "Look into that camera, and pretend Billy Bob is riding in from the mountains, without a shirt on..."
They wrote in paranthesis "(in reference to actor Billy Bob Thornton)". I'm almost positive, Leno didn't mean that Billy Bob. He was just using a hick sounding name, to make it seem more like a scene from Brokeback Mountain, which dealt with gay cowboys.
Of course, Leno apologized. He's always been known as one of the classier guys in the business.
I was talking to local DJ and comedian Chip Franklin, and he said when he would write jokes for The Tonight Show, once Jay used one without paying him. He sent a fax, and was pissed. Leno called him, saying that someone else wrote that joke. Chip thought it was cool of him to call himself and explain that.
I'm not sure why in this day and age, talk show hosts don't realize, someone will always find something to be offended by.
