Rock Hall of Fame

Madonna made it. And guess who didn't?

I'm not the biggest Madonna fan, but I have no problem with her making the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. She's touched on a number of genres of music, and she's had a bunch of hits, was influential (during the Mtv era. Sure, she lip synched a lot of performances, but that's part of what they do now with those choreographed dance routines.

I was bummed that the Beastie Boys didn't make it. I think they deserve to be there. They had the biggest selling rap album of all time, and their stuff is clever (if all you know is Fight for Your Right to Party...go get Paul's Boutique, you won't be disappointed).

I was on a radio show, and argued with a guy about Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five making it last year. I was glad. They were one of the first rap bands, and they wrote great lyrics (White Lines, The Message). He said, "But that isn't rock n roll." Which would be a great argument, except, it doesn't explain why jazz icon Miles Davis is in. Or Reggae star Bob Marley.

And Leonard Cohen has no business making it (he did, this year). An amazing songwriter and poet, but c'mon. This guys voice is harder to take than Dylans.

And, it's nice to see The Ventures go in. They had a lot of surf-rock stuff that was big back in the day. But the Dave Clark Five? Really? Do they deserve to be there?

I have no problem when it takes bands a few years to get in. Black Sabbath didn't make it on their first few years on the ballot, and they were heavy metal pioneers.

But, they really need to pull their heads out of their butts, and put Patti Smith in right now.
