When the Virginia Tech shooting happened, I was dating a woman whose mom is a psychiatrist. I asked her about the kid that did the shooting, and whether or not he should've been kicked out of the school when it was deemed he had mental problems.
Somehow, the topic came up about SDSU having a fake threat, from a student saying he'd do the same thing. She mentioned a school in Los Angeles having a similiar threat. I said schools should ignore those threats. She disagreed. And, we had an argument.
But, with this recent bomb threat at UCSD, it made me realize, it's insane to take threats like that seriously. Every time a bomb threat is made at an airport, we later find out it was a person running late for their flight. And they figured this would be a good way for the airport to hold the plane.
At a business, it's usually an employee that was fired the week before. Or, the ex-husband of a woman that works there.
Why evacuate a school/business, or whatever...and give the person doing the prank, the satisfication? Or, the 10th grader that just wanted a day off from school, to get his wish?
The psychiatrist told me, if I was the principal of the school and didn't evacuate and it was real, I'd be fired. Well, I'd be willing to take that risk. I'd bring in the cops, or bomb squads, let them search, but try not to disrupt classes.
She told me it was probably procedure to evacuate. I asked her what would happen if they got 50 bomb threats in a row. She then changed the subject, which I was glad to do.
I'm guessing when someone does plant a bomb, they don't call the business and inform them. That would give the people they want dead, a chance to escape, or find the bomb. I don't recall the 9/11 hijackers calling anyone before hand, and giving warning.
Someone find the statistics for me. Because, even if 1 in 100 that call in with a threat, have turned out to be real...I say we keep the kids in school. And we have the planes take off on time.
