New releases opening this week: The Great Gatsby and some other less exhausting things

Okay, The Great Gatsby. I shouldn't complain. It's not based on a toy property. It's not a superhero movie. It's not a sequel. It's not even a brainless shoot-em-up (not that there's anything wrong with that). It is, however, a reboot/remake/reimagining of a familiar property. So yeah, I think I'll complain. It wasn't great.

The Angels' Share. Great title. That's all I got so far. Which is a shame, because I want to see this one, even if I do prefer American whiskey to Scotch. Remember this scene from Star Trek IV? That was me trying to get the streaming screener to play. We seem to have ironed out the glitches. Hope to get to it this weekend. If you get there first, let me know what you think.

Something in the Air. Question for discussion: the French are famous for disdaining deodorant. Hippies are famous for being smelly as well. Are French hippies therefore the smelliest hippies? Secondary question for discussion: what happened to the hippies? Tertiary question: why does Patton Oswalt hate them so? (Language alert!)

Love is All You Need. Well, that and whiskey. (See above.) Scott admired Pierce Brosnan in this one. Remember how good he was in The Tailor of Panama?

Hava Nagila: The Movie. Score one for the Jews. Do the Christians have anything that's even close to an official party song?

Peeples. Meet the Parents with African-Americans. How's that for a reboot/remake/reimagining?

We here at The Big Screen have no excuse for having missed The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Too much celebrating over turning two, I guess.

See you next week!

Now what can they do with Encinitas unstable cliffs?

Make the cliffs fall, put up more warnings, fine beachgoers?
