Russel Redmond and Jennifer Silva Redmond were so inspired by the San Diego Latino Film Festival's presentation of Laura Castañeda's Devil's Breath, that they decided to write a feature length fictional account of the undocumented people who perished in the 2007 San Diego wildfires.
A funny thing happened on the way from transforming Devil's Breath into El Camino. A shortened version of the film, shot in September 2012, is still in post production. "During the course of writing the script and putting the movie together," Jennifer recalls, "we met all these talented people and that's how the Script to Screen symposium came to be."
"Russel who teaches at the San Diego City College Radio, Television, and Film Department," she continues, "heard of a grant that was able to apply for." The grant money came from the Carl B. Perkins Career and Technical Improvement Act of 2006. Once they learned the funds were available, Jennifer and Russel started to think about bringing industry professionals to town.
Topics covered will include scriptwriting, producing, directing, casting, pre-production, permits, locations and logistics, shooting, editing, promotion, distribution, and festival bookings. Each speaker will take time to answer audience questions.
Script to Screen: The San Diego Indie Scene will be held April 27th at the Saville Theater on the Campus of San Diego City College (Corner of 14th & C Street). Refreshments will be served at 9:30. The symposium kicks off at 10am and is expected to last until 6pm. Admission to the event and parking are free.
I had two prickly questions, both of which Jennifer handled with great aplomb. You know the old saying, "If something is free you usually get what you pay for?" Jennifer shrugged it off: "No way! The idea was always to do something for free so students and filmmakers from across the county could participate."
As for the choice of panelists, "We wanted to avoid the Comic Con approach where people would come just to gawk at celebrities. We've assembled an expert panel here to give advice on and start serious discussion about how to produce a film, be it a Hollywood blockbuster or industrial short."
Russel wanted to make sure to extend his sincere thanks “to the entire series of folks at City College and especially the Radio and Television Department and Theatre Department who helped make this possible.”
