Attention culture buffs, students of language, and seekers of free fun in South County. Que Viva! Cine Latino returns to Otay Ranch Town Center September 4, 11, 18, and 25.
In order to drain el ultimo trago — or the last swallow — of summer, the films will be screened in the outdoor food pavilion in the center of the mall. Prior to the 6:30 screenings, music and dance groups representing the Latin American spectrum will perform.
Tina Medina, marketing director for the Town Center, says people have the opportunity of buying food from the mall or bringing picnics.
The first film in the series, on September 4, is simply titled "No." The film is set in Chile 1988 during the crushing dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, the military commander who led the 1973 overthrow of democratically-elected Salvador Allende.
The film star Gael Garcia Bernal portrays an ad-man tasked with getting Chileans to vote "No" in order to oust Pinochet.
Medina notes that "all four films were critically-acclaimed in the last year." The other three in the series are September 4 "Cinco de Mayo: la Battala," September 18 "La Camioneta," and September 25 "The Girl."
