SDLFF's weeklong Exitos del Cine Latino starts tomorrow

7 days to see 13 films

In addition to their annual San Diego Latino Film Festival and the fine lineup of films Lisa Franek at the Digital Gym books each week, the Media Arts Center San Diego will occasionally surprise us with a week-long mini-festival.

Glenn Heath -- SDLFF program director and our arch rival over at City Beet -- has once again put together a celebration of cinema that demands our attention.

Based on the director's track record, if asked to pick the one big ticket title, I'd have to go with Raúl Ruiz's Night Across the Street, which I plan on popping into the DVD player right after I hit "post entry."

There are two aspects to this job that I despise: transcribing interviews and cutting-and-pasting film programs. I don't know who came up with the idea, but for me, the best thing to emerge from Exitos del Cine Latino is this streamlined, easily printable schedule:

In addition to the movies, each night brings a variety of live musical acts and artists. Screenings are held at both the Digilplex Mission Valley and the Digital Gym in North Park. Make sure to consult the handy schedule in order to avoid confusion.

General admission tickets are $10.50 with a discount price of $8.50 for students, seniors, and members of the military. Completists will no doubt look into purchasing an all-access pass that gets them into 13 movies for $100.

There are a few festivals in this town that are lucky to screen 5 films, let alone an ancillary 13 week series. Whatever it is that Glenn, Lisa, and the man behind the curtain, Ethan van Thillo, are doing to bring quality films to San Diego, please don't stop!
