San Francisco-based writer and filmmaker Charles Shaw just released an updated preview for his pending documentary Exile Nation: The Plastic People, a look at the lives of the deportees who live in squalor in the Tijuana River canal a.k.a “el bordo.”
“There are nearly 400 people deported a day to Tijuana, and nearly 1000 people living in the sewers because they have no other place to go,” Shaw told the Reader in February.
“Their life expectancy drops precipitously the moment they step out of the Customs House and into the chaos of Downtown Tijuana.”
Last week, police swept the canal (acting on a 39 million peso grant from the Mexican federal government), arresting many of its homeless inhabitants and reportedly transporting other back to their place of origin.
Many have already returned to their makeshift garbage shacks in the canal.
