Mr. Matt has generally positive things to say about the new French drama, Chicken With Plums, opening today at Landmark's La Jolla Village. It's the live-action follow-up to Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi's animated favorite, Persepolis. Matt notes, "It's a gutsy move to place a sour, despairing, even hateful man at the heart of a story and then expect the viewer to play along, even if the surrounding cast is engaging and the vignettes are suitably whimsical-tragical."
Little White Lies, currently playing at Landmark's La Jolla Village, is your basic two-and-a-half-hour remake of The Big Chill with French accents. You've been warned.
Arbitrage is a well-acted, but hopelessly family story about a fraudulent hedge fund magnate whose cool head sizzles after an accidental homicide claims his mistress’ life. Watching the unflappable Richard Gere squirm as his life in the boardroom and bedroom slowly unravels is one of the film’s great delights. I'll post my complete interview with the film's director, Nicholas Jarecki, when I finally get around to transcribing the damn thing.
It took four screenwriters and two directors to extrude Sleepwalk With Me. I suffered so you don't have to.
The best time you're likely to have at the movies this week is watching a familiar fish story spruced up in 3D. The stereoscopy is hardly an improvement on what is arguably the finest Disney animated creation since they dug a hole for Uncle Walt's body. (His noggin is being cryogenically kept alive on the same shelf with the heads of Vivien Leigh and Ted Williams.) Even if you own the DVD, Finding Nemo projected on a big screen is a near-religious experience to be strenuously adored. If nothing else it's a good payday for Albert Brooks, so don't miss it!
