Led Zeppelin Celebration Day local screenings Oct. 17

Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day, the film account of Led Zeppelin's 2007 reunion concert at London's 02 Arena, will open on 1,500 screens in 40 markets worldwide on Wednesday, October 17, including several local theaters.

Mission Valley 20 - 1640 Camino Del Rio N

Plaza Bonita - 3050 Plaza Bonita Rd

San Marcos - 1180 W San Marcos Blvd

Mira Mesa 18 - 10733 Westview Pkwy

The three surviving band members have been doing press conferences this week to promote the screenings, and the subsequent planned DVD release.

"It’s just four guys playing their heart out," said Jimmy Page at one. "In every rehearsal leading up to the reunion concert, Jason [Bonham, son of the band's late drummer John Bonham] really played his heart out. We all played our hearts out, to be honest."

When Led Zeppelin came together in December of 2007 to perform a one-night-only reunion concert at London’s O2 Arena in tribute of their friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, more than 20 million fans applied for the 18,000 available tickets in a worldwide lottery. It was the first headline show for the band in 27 years, and what fans had hoped would kick off a reunion tour would instead become a part of the Led Zeppelin mythos.

The set list includes:

  1. Good Times Bad Times

  2. Ramble On

  3. Black Dog

  4. In My Time Of Dying

  5. For Your Life

  6. Trampled Under Foot

  7. Nobody’s Fault But Mine

  8. No Quarter

  9. Since I’ve Been Loving You

  10. Dazed And Confused

  11. Stairway To Heaven

  12. The Song Remains The Same

  13. Misty Mountain Hop

  14. Kashmir

  15. Whole Lotta Love

  16. Rock And Roll

“Led Zeppelin makes more rock 'n roll history with the phenomenal concert film of their 2007 London reunion,” says Grant Calton, Omniverse Vision’s CEO. “Omniverse Vision is hugely excited to be the global theatrical distributor of Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day - it promises to be the cinema event of 2012.”

The theatrical screenings will be presented in high definition with surround sound in movie theaters for what's being billed as "a strictly limited engagement."

Home versions will then be available in multiple video and audio formats on November 19, from Swan Song/Atlantic Records. Specific product details will be announced soon. Here's the official trailer:

The last time Led Zep played San Diego was March 10, 1975. On tour behind their Physical Graffiti album, they performed a 14-song set at the San Diego Sports Arena, with no opening band. Doors for the sold-out concert opened at 3:00 p.m., and seating was unreserved, with no chairs on the floor.

A ten-foot balloon imprinted with "1975 World Tour" was bounced around the audience, until the band finally took the stage at 9:00 p.m., an hour later than scheduled.

As captured on the bootleg album Symphony in a Thousand Parts, after the opening medley of "Rock and Roll" and "Sick Again," Robert Plant implored the unruly crowd to "shut right up" and "step back," as patrons pressed toward the stage.

The drum solo in "Moby Dick" ran just under a half hour in length, and female attendees reportedly showered the stage with underwear during the opening strains of "Stairway to Heaven."

The bootleg album does not include the final encore, "Heartbreaker." Two weeks after this show, Zeppelin became the first band in history with six albums on the charts simultaneously.

Several Led Zep comic books were produced in San Diego by Hillcrest-based Revolutionary Comics, as part of their Rock 'N' Roll Comics series.

A collected graphic novel featuring those comics (disclosure: co-created by yers truly) was recently published by Bluewater Productions.
