Why is it that regurgitated sputum like American Pie Reunion is released on 3,192 screens while a congenial, handsomely-cast, and thoroughly engaging film like 10 Years gets dumped with zero fanfare on one screen at Horton Plaza? You think that a film starring hunk du jour Channing Tatum and his real-life bride, Jenna Dewan would at least merit an auditorium at its sister-house, Edwards Mira Mesa.
The graduating class of Lake Howell High meets for it's tenth reunion. This student body appears to have been created in a petri dish. Hitler couldn't have engineered a more physically unblemished graduating class. In addition to the Tatums there's Ari Graynor, Justin Long, Max Minghella, Rosario Dawson, Oscar Issac, Aubrey Plaza, Kate Mara, Ron Livingston, Anthony Mackie, and one of the sexiest, most natural actresses that no one seems to talk about, Lynn Collins (Uncertainty, Angels Crest, John Carter.)
Even a character as seemingly limited as the the class bully is not without his charms. Watching the beefy Chris Pratt struggle to make amends with every nerd he beat up on during senior year is one of the true moviegoing joys of 2012.
There are no fistfights at this gathering, no smarmy sex talk, and not a fart joke in sight. Even when it appears that things are about to go wrong -- Minghella and Long decide to act on their drunkenness by toilet papering Collins' home -- first time writer, director Jamie Linden always errs on the side of compassion, not obnoxious giggles.
Chances are this isn't going to be around another week, so scamper over to Horton Plaza or look for it on VOD. This is one class reunion you won't mind attending.
