The Jerry Lewis Labor Day Teleth...Marathon

Grocery shopping is hell of late. No images of Jerry Lewis' cropped head adorning Sara Lee cheesecake boxes. No "Aisles of Smiles." No robotic checkout gal asking, "Would you like to donate your change to Jerry's Kids?"

Last year the Muscular Dystrophy Association downsized Jerry to oblivion, stripping the man -- who helped to raise over $1 billion dollars for people with neuromuscular disease -- of his title as MDA National Chairman.

Labor Day will never be the same without Jerry to guide his annual "Extra Special Special," but thanks to Antenna TV, Lewisianiacs won't go hungry come Monday, September 3.

Starting at 2 am, Antenna TV will screen 4 pictures that Lewis starred in and/or directed.

TIMPANI! OH, YEAH!

The network holds the rights to Jerry's Columbia features, so don't expect a pairing with Dean, or for that matter anything from his golden period at Paramount.

The two Lewis-directed features were attempts to break away from his target audience of adolescents and both are well worth your time.

The Big Mouth finds Jerry on the lam from mobsters Harold J. Stone and Charlie Callas, the latter spending most of his time walking on all fours, panting and frothing like a rabid pooch with Parvo. Marvelous! It also features several invigorating cartoon sight-gags inspired by Jerry's mentor, Frank Tashlin. 3 on a Couch is a sublime study in schizophrenia, another of Lewis' nutty preoccupations.

Don't Raise the Bridge, Lower the River and Hook, Line, and Sinker are secondary works made to the delight of Mr. Lewis' bank account. I suffered, so why shouldn't you?
