Oh, dear. Someone seems to have let me onto the review page again. Well, let's make the best of it. I was more charmed than some by Lily Collins' performance as Snow White in Mirror Mirror, but I tried not to make too big a deal of it, because the movie clearly belongs to Julia Roberts. Which - surprise, surprise - is not a bad thing. And in discussing the way the fairy tale format provided a welcome limit on director Tarsem Singh, I got to use the phrase "glam gods getting fire-whipped in super slo-mo." So there's that. But seriously: Collins brought a kind of unspoiled sweetness to the role that I found refreshing instead of cloying. Well done.
Wrath of the Titans was not very good. I am so very tired of the magic geegaw. This time it's a spear. But in describing Perseus, I did get to use the phrase "proto-mullet." So there's that.
Free Men could have stood just a hair more discomfort on the part of those Jews who decided to masquerade as Muslims to avoid detection by the Germans occupying Paris during WWII. But then, the one Jew we get to know is already adept at hiding... Not a great film, but a good one. A worthy one. (And by "worthy," I do not mean "issue-y and boring.") And I loved the faces.
Don't see Delicacy if you don't like looking at Audrey Tautou. Because the camera spends an awful lot of time looking at her. It's not a dumb move - her face is both lovely and fascinatingly odd - but it's worth noting.
