With no phone booths left to cram themselves into and PETA cracking down on goldfish swallowing, what's left for contemporary college kids to get their kicks?
In the beginning there was planking: lie face down in a preferably famous, dangerous, or funny location, and have a friend take a picture to post on social networking sites.
Planking.
Extreme planking.
Then came owling which involved finding a makeshift tree branch on which to squat, and have a friend take a picture to post on social networking sites.
What'll these kids think of next? “Batmanning!”
Given the initiative, any schlub can plank, but it takes a certain degree of stamina to perch like an owl and even more athleticism to hang upside-down.

I must credit the pace-setting youngsters at Purdue University for not only starting the craze, but also having the good sense to use the seminal Neil Hefti Batman Theme to underscore their chicanery. But when it comes to originality, this class would receive a barely-passing grade.
Kids today and their punk friends in the alley think they're so brilliant and leading-edge. Bruce Wayne was known to don latex and slide down poles with his young ward, Dick, but when did Batman ever hang upside-down? This stunt not only pre-dates Angelyne, where I come from, we call it 'Grandfathering.'
