Given Mr. Marks's astonishing recollection of the glories of Super 8, I can't think of a better time to mention the hi-tech nostalgia-factory that is the Super 8 app (free for a limited time!) Now you can use your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 2, or iPod touch 4th Generation to record movies that look like they were filmed on this:
(And holy crow, the website where I found that picture says that they were still making Super 8 filmstock in 2005!)
Truly, we live in a magical age.
My own chief memory of Super 8 moviemaking comes from watching my brother film his best friend David Narby in the story of Darth Vader vs. The Muppets. (Early mash-up!) Narby was the only person we'd ever seen who owned a real Vader helmet. We had a bunch of the small-scale Muppet dolls they were selling back in the late '70s, and we fastened unbent wire hangers to their arms to mimic the famous hand gestures. Vader put the force choke on Kermit and tossed him across the room with a gesture, but then Animal (my favorite at the time) came on the scene, and things got ugly for the Sith.
Whoa. They weren't kidding about the nostalgia.
