With Angelina Jolie far too eminent to lower herself to grace yet another gratuitous female-empowerment blockbuster, it’s up to Zoe Saldana, an actress Hollywood can’t quite pigeonhole, to this time enact revenge against the male aggressors. The opening sequence -- a chase that allows 9-year-old schoolgirl Cataleya (Amandla Stenberg) to show off her skills at Parkour -- hearkens back to the breezy, rapid fire action of co-writer/producer Luc Besson’s past glories (District B-13, Taken). The film doesn’t mature along with her. Flash forward 15 years as Besson and Robert Mark Kamen’s garden-variety plotting steamrolls logic. Don’t wardens watch movies? One would think that by now every correctional facility in America would have learned to tighten the screws on their air vent escape routes. Directed by Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3). With solid support from Cliff Curtis and Lennie James in the cop role frequently reserved for the pricier Morgan Freeman.
