Food and fun Downtown/Gaslamp

I went to dinner on Wednesday night with friends. This outing was in response to the Cohn restaurants' special of $20.10 per person, 3 course meal deal. We decided to go to Gaslamp Strip Club, though I did not relish the concept of cooking my own dinner. First of all, I had contacted Cohn about reservations through Open Table (this restaurant is not on the list). I received a very prompt response from Deborah Schumacher advising of the rationale and making arrangements for us.

When I arrived, the others were not there yet. I was greeted by the manager, Andrea. She jokingly insisted that I have a drink! My friends arrived just as I got to the bar. We had a drink & then (upon a prearranged signal to Andrea from me) we were seated in a comfortable booth right next to a grilling station. Our meals included several choices; meat or Ahi, a list of sides, & dessert. Since it was wine Wednesday, we ordered a bottle of wine at half price. We started with a large bowl of salad (served family style) which included a nice assortment of veges. When our meat arrived, we were ready to get cooking & try not to ruin it! I had a top sirloin which was appropriately thick for one who likes steak cooked medium rare. The others were cooking chicken, ahi, & rib-eye. I also put the garlic bread on the grill & munched a piece while waiting for my steak to cook. The grill station includes tongs, many spice mixtures, steak sauce & plates (a definite necessity). Our sides did not all arrive at the same time (kitchen was busy). First we got the garlic mashed potatoes and mac & cheese. A few minutes later came the onion rings and sauteed mushrooms. It was a lot of food and everything was quite tasty. Our server (I'm sorry I cannot remember her name) was efficient and managed to keep an eye on us (somebody has to do it). Andrea also stopped to check on us!! Dessert was Drumstick chocolate cones or chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches. We were 2 & 2. I would have preferred something lighter (mousse or sorbet), but did not have any trouble consuming my cookies. One member of our foursome did not finish her cone. This led to a picture taking crescendo. Deb A & Kelly competed in photographing the melting ice cream cone! We had a great evening, which included lots of picture taking, gabbing, & general silliness. Kelly was enjoying his night out with 3 females!

Upon leaving, I made sure to thank Andrea and I told her we (me & whomever) would be back.

This would not be a place for a romantic dinner, more for a group outing. It is actually pretty darn fun. You might want to give it a try during Restaurant Week (01/17-01/22).

The new apartment building, Strata, is now ready to rent. This is the too large structure on the corner of 10th & Market. I do not know how many units are available but, I am sure that none are for low income people. They are touted as "luxury" and apparently the prices are quite luxurious! One real estate ad stated a 2 BR, 2 B place was $4250/month. Good luck. There will likely be a lot of empty apartments at Strata. I hope to go over & take a look for myself this weekend.

Enjoy our lovely San Diego weather as so much of the country is experiencing COLD, snow, ice. It is winter, after all.
