Kindness in East Village

Saturday night, I was walking home from a day of art & dinner in Little Italy. Walking east on E St., I encountered several homeless persons carrying gift bags and smiling. I crossed 8th and found the source of the smiles. There were several young people with a wagon in tow, delivering nice gift bags to the homeless in front of the library. For a small part of one day, these chronically homeless people, part of the San Diego society, were gracious, thankful and smiling. They were animated and seemed to be happy, even if it was only one night. A quote by Peter McWilliams: "Willingness opens the doors to knowledge, direction, and achievement. Be willing to know, be willing to do, be willing to create a positive result."

These young people are a group of friends who gather together, packing bags, filling them with sandwiches, fruit, snacks, water and delivering to the needy. Their leader is Kiley. She is the one in the middle of the picture, leaning forward.
This is a collaborative effort, starting with an idea by Kiley and her sister. These young people drive to San Diego from their homes in Temecula about once a month, doing what they can.

Several of the recipients had tears in their eyes. Compassion, according to Merriam-Webster: "sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it."
Even I felt a sense of well being as I took a picture of this group (rights and wrongs, was bandied about as a group name!) and headed home.

If only we could impart this feeling to our San Diego City Council.
They need to open their eyes and take a cue from Kiley & friends.

As to Verizon, I had a nice discussion with an official (can't find his name) and he agreed that people unaware of or not understanding the cell phone world, would definitely be confused. There is no information anywhere about toll-free calling. I also made a suggestion to FCC that they should require all cell phone companies to make this clear with signage, information in the cocntract, etc. So hopefully, other consumers will not face the same situation. Just remember, TOLL-FREE is not toll free unless you use a land line.
