The once upon a time, Finest City in America, has now reached another pinnacle in the research/lists department. The thing that's sad is none of these "lists/studies" give us anything to be proud of.
From WikiAnswers: San Diego is in 6th place in the USA for prices of hotels/lodging.
"These rankings are taken from the American Chamber of Commerce Researchers Association. Each city is followed by a number that indicates how much more expensive the cost-of-living is in that city as compared to the national average"

For those of you who happen to have the same problem as me in understanding the economy, these researchers are a big help. It gives people who may have thought about moving here a firm grasp on the consequences of doing so. (It gives me a chance to ask the never ending question: who is going to buy the many, many, many downtown condos??) HELLO, anybody out there, anybody listening?? Anybody know anything?? I wonder how the developers are faring? Is there some big plan, not yet revealed?? Here's a challenge: It would be great to hear from BOSA, McMillen, Manchester, et al to get their take on what is happening, how they plan to sell the empty condos, any insight on the San Diego market. Let's see what happens!!!
Does it make any sense that southern California has produce farms, avocado growers, wineries, etc. but they apparently send their stuff to Michigan (just an example) and we get stuff from Central & South America. I do know about this because they put those dam little stickers on each piece of fruit so we know where it came from. Why would I care? I doubt I would need to send it back or visit the farm to reunite my mango with its family. So I have an idea that those stickers keep people employed AND they provide a learning tool for the millions of US High School graduates who do not know that our fruit comes from Venezuela (another example). Then they can look it up on a globe, atlas, even a dictionary. In conclusion, our grocery stores stock produce that can enrich the education of the younger generations.
I will NEVER understand the fact that San Diego gas prices are so ridiculously, artificially inflated. That's it on this subject.
I think it would be a step in the right direction to throw out that old, tired expression, 'what the market will bear' and replace it with a new hip version, 'when the market is fair'. I prefer the new one, how about you? I would suggest this campaign get started in the housing industry, inclusive of renters & owners. One of my fondest memories on this subject was when I lived in Anaheim and we had rent control. I had a fully furnished studio apartment at a luxury apartment building at a cost of $240/month. I lived there for awhile! Even adjusted for inflation, that would be a good deal today (I asked for help on this).
I truly love it when our politicians, developers, CCDC, etc. tell us that there is affordable housing downtown. Thing is, I can't find it and they can't tell me where it is!! I currently live in a HUD subsized apartment & my rent still exceeds 50% of my uncome. Now don't get into a snit because I am well aware of the fact that I could pay less to live in another area. BUT, I choose to live downtown and plan to stay. There is some sort of "law" requiring developers to include affordable units in every building. There is also a provision that allows them to pay an "in lieu of" amount. The CCDC apparently keeps that money and uses it to build, what and where I don't know. I am only one of many (thousands??) who really need a break.
My income is static, so paying increased prices, higher credit card interest & fees, increased MTS fees etc. Plus, I have the extra burden of prescription medication. 2 years ago I fell into that darn 'donut hole' in the ever touted Medicare prescription drug plan. Now I get several medications from a local pharmacy and this year a high priced drug I take finally has a generic so, I was able to order more under the insurance. In the past 6 weeks I have paid $300 co-pays for out patient procedures, $225 for MRI's, $80 for post procedure medication, $85 for doctor visits. I did get a purple cast, though!!!
Son of a B. I'm watching the baseball game and the Angels just gave the NYY another run (throwing error), bottom of the 8th. The media folks were hoping for a Dodgers vs. NYY series. Lots of Californians were looking for a Freeway Series. But, neither happened. Game over. NYY vs. Phillies.
So long
