I apologize to all my fans for the lack of recent blogs. I am unable to use my right hand and it really takes a long time to type with my left hand. Try it sometime!!
I went to a meeting on Saturday, put on by EVCAN (East Village Community Action Network). The focus was on the issue of homelessness and how to handle the recent addition of tents to our sidewalk areas. I brought several photos showing the tent/homes right across the street from where I live.
There were several speakers and I was able to meet some of the people I have been corresponding with. This is a proactive community organization and I was impressed by the number of people who attended on a Saturday morning. I was quite pleased to see councilman, Kevin Faulconer. He spoke briefly about the facts surrounding the Federal Court decision allowing the homeless to sleep on public sidewalks from 9 pm to 6 am, as long as they do not block the pathway. He also stated that CCDC is a vital component of downtown redevelopment. (We disagree on that topic).
Clean & Safe gave an impressive presentation, explaining all the things they do, including water conservation. One current project is to revise the power washing schedule to reflect the changing environment and the 9th street "excess" (my opinion) washing.
Unfortunately, we will be losing a sizeable number of police officers, due to lack of money. There was a discussion about establishing a Neighborhood Watch and it seems there is enough momentum to get this going. The police department is much more involved than I had known. Their job is not an easy one as there are so many reasons for homelessness (education, job loss, mental issues, addiction, etc.) and there is no single solution to the problem.
The EVCAN meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Black Historical Society on Market St., 5:30 pm to 7 pm.
There are a lot of residents with a myriad of ideas who show a definite interest in our community. I am hoping to get the noise issue to the top of the priority charts. There was some discussion at Saturday's meeting and it was based on quality of life. I have also received some responses to my blogs and I am hoping that we can manage to make some changes, especially on the approval of entertainment permits and rooftop bars.
