Wow, what a fantastic, emotional, uplifting, glorious, historic day. January 20, 2009, will be a day to remember for a long, long time. We, as Americans, can once again be proud. I feel like thanking everyone who came out to vote last November as with each vote cast, yesterday became a reality.
The party at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday was quite a show. Thousands of hearty souls braved bitter cold weather for a chance to be there. I was amazed at the number of celebrities who spoke, performed, honored the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. Garth Brooks was incredibly energetic. Bono was ready to take on the world. Bruce Springsteen was alive with emotion. John Mellencamp never sounded better. Mary J. Blige showed off her beautiful voice. Stevie Wonder seemed to be in awe of what was going on. Pete Seeger may be old, but he was smiling with joy as the audience sang along to "This Land is Your Land". That is a short list from a long list of wonderful performances, reminding me of the fact that there are a lot of songs about this great country we call home. For those who missed it and would like to see a great show, HBO is airing it tonight, Saturday & Sunday. Check their website: www.hbo.com.
Inauguration Day was bitterly cold, but the people came, wanting to be there to witness a moment in history. The ceremony was well conceived and was probably moved along by the fact that it was so cold. The preacher who gave the benediction was full of spirit and he got the loud response I'm sure he wanted on his requests for, "Can I get an Amen". Our new President, Barack Obama gave an address that was surely from the heart. Of course, he talked about all the problems left behind (by the previous administration). I had the feeling he was being gracious not to mention that the 8 years of George Dubya Bush had left the country in rather a mess!! He cautioned us all to be patient as some of his work will take months, even years to accomplish. He also took on the demeanor of someone who intends to lead, but will not be alone. Congress needs to step up to the plate and get some work done!
Walking the streets of San Diego, I got thumbs up and more than a few positive comments as I was wearing my 4th of July shirt. Lots of the red, white & blue along with some gold stars. I put that on with pride. It is again great to be an American. Even if you voted for John McCain or someone else, I'll bet you could feel the elation and maybe you even joined in the singing on Sunday. After all, you too are an American and we are all going on a journey, later to be written up in history books as a turning point in the life of a rather young country.
So, off we go into the wild blue yonder of America the Beautiful. Enjoy the ride.
