Politics

The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance. -- Cicero,55 BC

So even centuries ago, the same problems were facing governments. My personal favorite is "the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled". I wonder if that has ever been accomplished.

With a very big election looming, I encourage everyone to get registered and VOTE. Election day is November 4. In California your registration must be postmarked today, October 20.

Recent polls show that the current ads by Obama have been effective. These are the ones that liken McCain to George W. Until the financial crisis reared its ugly head, many thought McCain stood a fighting chance. Now, since these problems are bound to the current administration, many are going to vote for a Democratic President for the first time. When things hit the pocketbook & diminish what little we have in savings, someone must be blamed. Political and corporate greed. Big Business.

Then there is that situation at AIG, where the company received bail out money and spent it on a retreat for executives. It is just so wrong in so many ways. Every single one of those "retreaters" should be fired. There is no excuse for the unmitigated gall it took for a "fleecing of America".

Another issue is that our Congress approved the bill for a $700 billion bail out of financial institutions that made very bad business decisions. According to Susan Davis, the bailout was the only way to avert a financial crisis. She advised me that "as a result of greed and reckless lending practices, our entire economy is at risk. I am angry too." Then there is the "pork". A few examples: tax credits for bicycling commuters; tax break for Puerto Rican & Virgin Islands Rum; funds for Alaska fishermen still plagued by the Exxon Valdez spill of 1999; tax exemption for wooden arrows; extension of duty suspension for wool trade.

Our government is a perfect example of good ideas gone bad. The founding fathers would be aghast to see how their plan for checks & balances at 3 levels, executive, congressional & judicial has become corrupted. It is now big business, pampering, buying votes, catering by lobbyists. I am not sure how lobbyists got to this level of influence. When did it start and why? Does anybody truly believe they are represented by those who "serve"??

Fix it. Get out there and vote. Make your voices heard. Get involved. At least get on the mailing lists for updates from Washington DC, Sacramento, etc.
