Historical Friction

Groups Clash Over La Jolla Beach Cottage's Historical Importance

Jack and Karen Visin want to tear down their La Jolla cottages and build a duplex. San Diego's Save Our Heritage Organization wants to stop them. Both sides have turned to the San Diego Planning Commission, which is considering a re-evaluation of the Historical Significance Report commissioned and submitted by the Visins. The report claims that the site has no historical or architectural significance. The protestors say otherwise.

Rolling Stone magazine lists The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds as the second-greatest album of all time, right behind The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The popular story is that the album's name came from band member Mike Love's question to fellow bandmate Brian Wilson: "Who's gonna hear this shit? The ears of a dog?" But longtime La Jollans know better. "Brian was spending a lot of time at Windandsea while he was making Pet Sounds," recalls former groupie Astrid Nightwing. "He got to know the Paul and Jamie Muldoon, who at that time were hosting a lot of swingers' parties at their beach house," located at 341 Playa Del Sur - exactly the property the Visins want to demolish. "Brian didn't really get in on the action; he tended to stay in the living room and tend the bong. But he loved the vibe. One night, I was keeping him company, and he turned to me and said, 'Will you listen to those people? All that yelping and yowling - it's like a bunch of pet sounds!' I understand that the City of San Diego may be hesitant to award historical status to a house because it used to host sex parties, but there's no denying that it's historically significant. Okay, so maybe it wasn't the most morally upright spot. Neither was Little Bighorn, and you don't see people putting up condos there."
