"Mommy, Mommy, Mommy!" I squealed, while hopping up and down on my perch. I then realized that Mommy would only be able to hear my loud thumps and not understand my bunny-speak. No problem-I still wanted to get her attention, because I wanted her to see the pretty rainbow fluttering right outside the back door. It was floating in the air, next to a small plant. I sniffed to see if it smelled as lovely as it looked. What a sweet, little bird!
When Mommy came to check on me, she didn't notice it until she saw that I was trying to push my way out of the cage. When she finally did see it, she oooohed and aaahed over it.
"See the pretty butterfly, Ramsey? She dropped by to say hello to you!"
Butterfly? My new friend wasn't a bird? It was so pretty that I wanted it to stay close by forever. It was so colorful and danced around in the air like a ballerina. It even had a pair of wings that I wish I had. Why, oh why, can't I fly?
As Mommy fed me my favorite breakfast of carrots, spinach and hay, I watched the butterfly come to rest on a small plant. The cool breeze lifted its wings, allowing them to gently sway, back and forth. It was so pretty.
"Butterfly, will you please be my friend?" I sighed.
By now, Mommy had already left the kitchen, so I was all by myself, when the beautiful, little jewel flew towards my cage. It hovered near the bars. I was so happy that I hopped over to be closer to her.
The butterfly was suspended in mid-flight, its wings fluttering like lace in the morning air. I stared at her, trying to hold my sniffles under control so I wouldn't scare her. She danced around and around until a gust of wind carried her away.
"Don't go, Butterfly! Come back!" I cried. I looked toward the sky to see if she may have landed in the tree branches above the door. There was no sign of her, just the sight of a few, fluffy clouds dancing around in the sunlight.
My beautiful rainbow was gone...
