I served in the Navy, and I've worked in IT/Telecoms around the world.
San Diego's parks, roads, water, sewer, and public safety have all been cut while we subsidize ugly condos downtown. We have become "Enron by the Sea", with scandal prone agencies like CCDC and SEDC bleeding us dry.
Stephen Whitburn, an outsider who has worked as the Red Cross spokesman in San Diego, wants to change the way we do business in this city.
Whitburn wants independent audits before we spend any more public money on redevelopment schemes.
As KPBS reports:
Two of San Diego’s development corporations are in trouble, one for fraud and one for conflicts of interest. Candidate Steven Whitburn supports a grand jury report that suggests city staff could do the job of redevelopment themselves.
Whitburn: "We should dissolve both of these corporations, we should bring these redevelopment efforts back under the city’s auspices to provide better oversight and more control over taxpayer dollars."
The other candidate, Todd Gloria, a lifelong political staffer, defends his downtown friends and campaign contributors at CCDC and SEDC, saying that the agencies just need a little tweaking.
Voice of San Diego reports that the Labor Council of San Diego and Imperial Counties tried to extort a promise from Stephen Whitburn to vote only for their choice for council president.
Stephen Whitburn stood up and said no. He refused to sell his vote.
Gloria went along with the secret deal, and got the union bosses endorsement and money.
This is why, as an independent, I cannot trust Todd Gloria with my vote.
Stephen Whitburn will be an independent voice for the rest of us, and we need him on the San Diego City Council.
