Wedding Bells

Congratulations to CCDC Board Member Jennifer LeSar and lame duck District Three Council Member Toni Atkins.

The happy couple, who have been dating for seven years and cohabiting for one year, finally tied the knot in a small private ceremony this weekend.

I'm a strong defender of gay marriage. As a straight white male, I'm in no way threatened by loving couples who exchange wedding vows. As far as I'm concerned, it's their own business, and I wish them every happiness.

I wonder if the same is true for Jennifer and Toni. After all, both of them are beneficiaries and confidants of Doug "Papa" Manchester, the bigot backer of Proposition 8, who would make any gay marriage illegal.

Toni and Jeniffer back Manchester's projects in downtown, pumping public money into his pockets so he can turn around and use that same money to attack loving couples who only want equal protection under the constitution.

For the last several years, they've been whispering sweet nothings in each other's ears, though they claim to never discuss public business with each other...that would be a big conflict of interest considering that CCDC is supposed to be under the supervision of the Council.

Now that they've finally taken the big step of making honest women of each other and actually gotten hitched, will either of them recuse themselves? It doesn't seem so. In fact, Jennifer is the one who's directing the effort to find a replacement for her good friend Nancy Graham, who's conflicts of interest at CCDC are now legendary.

With a new council coming into office, Toni's out of a job soon, and Jennifer will have to bear the burden of supporting her new spouse. She's unlikely to give up her comfy position on the CCDC Board while Toni's unemployed. In a UT article, buried on page 3, they claim that since Toni's gonna be out of office soon, they'll have no conflicts.

Uh, yeah...

Anyway, I do wish them the best. I hope they take a long, long, long honeymoon...maybe until the end of the decade, and that Jennifer resigns her CCDC seat to "spend more time with her family", just like her disgraced buddy Nancy Graham.
