When I was a young woman back in the 1970s, I began reading books by Danielle Steel. The thing I Ioved most was that she was an original. She has always done her own thing; her books are like no other. In addition, she genuinely sweeps the reader away by telling a fairy tale. She is so emotionally invested in her stories, the reader easily gets caught up in her enthusiasm.
At the last Romance Writers of America meeting in San Diego, a speaker said that making contact with your favorite authors can prove to be valuable. She once became so familiar with her own favorite, that they met for coffee when the author came to town for a book signing.
Several days later, I saw Danielle Steel on TMZ. I hadn't seen her in the media in quite some time. She has had a very difficult time coping with the death of her son, Nicholas. I was inspired to send her an e-mail to not only tell her that I am a fan; but to say that her books have had a big impact on my own writing. I too want to be original.
Imagine my surprise when I received an e-mail from her this morning. It could have been written by a web administrator but it is signed with her name. In it, she thanks me for the message, and says it was wonderful to hear my kind words about her books. She is also glad to hear how they've inspired me in my own writing efforts.
I am very excited about the e-mail and feel encouraged to press forward even during the times when writing seems to be an uphill battle.
Danielle's latest book is called "Betrayal" and although I haven't read it yet, I'm sure it will be just as mesmerizing as the many others.
Love,
M.
