Mr. Watchdog
There has been a homeless guy in my neighborhood for a couple of years. He staggers around drunk, and one time got between me and my car in the parking lot at 7-ll late one night. He insisted I "donate to his charity." He left when he saw my dogs. He panhandles on the center divide and comes up to my window and talks through the window. He staggers around drunk in Albertson's on West Valley Parkway. Losing your job is one thing, but the jerk that stagger around the streets of Del Dios is a menance, and so is a menatlly ill guy that wears women's shoes and short shorts. They are a threat to public safety and I support Black's 100 percent. In fact, the stickers are on back-order now, but I'll buy them when they come in. Maybe the Del Dios bum will get the hint, and quit sticking his head in my window.— June 24, 2010 8:58 p.m.
Outlawed Canine Community
There are plenty of dog parks around. You do have a choice. Be willing to take your dog a bit further, rather than take him where he doesn't belong. And anyway, walking is good for you too. The Mayflower and RB dog parks have grass. Why pay for it? Dogs don't care.— June 24, 2010 8:20 p.m.
May New Home Sales Plunge; West Worst. Wall Street Stunned
Oh, Surfpuppy! Don't even start on who's at fault for this economic mess. According to my husband, who knows all of this political stuff, Bush didn't create the economic mess, the Clinton administration did. Attorney General Janet Reno threatened to investigate and bring charges against banks who didn't provide loans to minorities, who ultimately couldn't afford them. He tries to absolve Bush of all blame, and I say, well, what the h*ll was Bush doing for eight years? He wasn't there to play tiddly winks! And then he concedes that Bush screwed up too. I voted for Obama too, however, he scares me with the way he spends money, and he's a typical liberal--all talk and no action. I've lost confidence in him. I've switched back to the GOP, but I really don't care for either party. I may switch back if Palin runs for office. It takes more than a cute pit bull joke, an eye wink, and showing a little leg to win my vote. And, I'll go to my grave before I vote for a hunter!— June 23, 2010 10:16 p.m.
Dorian Hargrove suffers life-changing skateboard accident
I saw a strange thing today. I was entering Albertson's while a young man was going out. He had a skateboard, and Dorian's cover short had been cut out and decoupaged onto the bottom. He sped off before I could ask him about it. I suppose either Dorian is his hero, or it is there to serve as a reminder to be careful while skateboarding.— June 19, 2010 8:15 p.m.
How Much is that Doggie at the Shelter? Nada!!!
I got my "discount dog," Katie, from the Carlsbad shelter in 2005. She was $35. The best money I ever spent. She was the great love of my life, and even though we only had her with us for three years, she had more of an impact on me than anyone else ever has. She was about 12. Hers are the only ashes I've ever kept, and when I go down, we are going to together.— June 16, 2010 12:46 a.m.
Oh where oh where can he/she be?
Have to disagree, Refried. Pistol Pete was not what I'd call "a Really, nice guy." He was an admitted felon, had no conscience and poor impulse control. These things do not add up rto a nice person. I believe he was prohibitwed from the site for vulgarity, if I remember correctly. He told Cuddlefish to do it with an animal, or some such thing. I personally believe that people should be stricken from the site for harrassment. I'm less offended by profanity and vulgarity. I liked Josh. I didn't keep up with his comments as much as you all did, but he didn't offend me. I sometimes had a feeling he was trying to bait us with his clueless remarks. He was always nice to me, I miss him. I think everyone is entitled to their opinion and it doesn't have to agree with mine. I think sometimes he worded things poorly--like when he said (to paraphrase) that all adopted kids are mentally ill (or whatever). The truth is, many adopted children ARE mentally ill, because their biological parents had the same illness. There's nothing wrong with saying that, but he should have been more careful about how he said it. BTW, Auntie, I liked your story about the horse, awhile back. That was funny.— June 7, 2010 4:17 p.m.
Bad Owner
Grasca: Government doesn't have insurance issues because it doesn't carry insurance. If they lose a lawsuit, they just pay it out of the revenue. It wouldn't present anymore of a liability than the senior patrol, if they just had an overseer to witness and get license plate numbers, that would be enough. For one thing, a person in uniform would cause some of these irresponsible dog owners to think twice before bringing an "iffy" dog into the park. I think Cricket's Corner at RCHS has watch-out. I think it's a good idea to have security in all dog parks.— June 7, 2010 3:59 p.m.
Bad Owner
Not all pit bulls are angels--the denial on thepart of owners is part of the problem. Some are good, some are not. If anyone thinks they can do no wrong, go down to the county shelter and ask someone who works there. They have plenty of problems with dog aggression. I've often said if they don't come in dog aggressive, they will be when they come out, because sometimes pit bulls will start to growl at other dogs after they've been in the shelter environment awhile. People with questionable dogs often ARE questionable owners. Dogs tend to develop the personalities of their owners. I am in favor of a volunteer team of people to serve in the capacity of lifeguards at dog parks. They should be equipped with video cameras and equipment and training to break up fights and attacks. They should also have the power to arrest if an owner should get out of line. This would end dog park problems.— June 5, 2010 7:25 p.m.
How to Pick a Pit Bull
I couldn't do it for a better breed of dog. Unfortunately, if you don't know how to pick a pit bull, you are contributing to the bad rap they get. I think there would be less attacks on small dogs at the dog park if people found out about the history of the dog. At the county shelters, they will tell you why it came in, and if it was relinquished, why it was relinquished. For instance, I was told that animal control officers found Nancy, shaking a cat in her neighbor's garage. So I've never let her get around a cat and we've had no catastrophes. If owners took the time to dtermine ahead of time whether a dog is good around children or small animals, many catastrophes would be avoided. BTW, after interacting with as many as 500 shelter pit bulls, the only dog that ever bit me was an African Basenji I was fostering, the little booger.— June 2, 2010 9:22 a.m.
Bad Owner
SurfPuppy619: Mine are angels too. The problem is not all of them are, and the ones that aren't are give all of them a bad name. This attack may have been avoided if the owner had gotten the dog's history at the shelter. If it's a stray and nothing is known, assume the dog is hinky around children and small animals and don't put them at risk.— June 1, 2010 8:37 p.m.
