Debra Fedyna, I was trying to find some cumulative numbers for how much Pearson has made on test and pre-test material. I could find piecemeal prices, but not a grand total.

EELO59, your post about incorporating critical thinking into everyday lessons reminds me of my own learning curve. When I first met Kristin Phatak demonstrating against common core outside a Duncan meeting, the first words out of my mouth were, "well the common core promotes critical thinking why would you be opposed to it." I subsequently spoke to many classroom teachers and reflected about my own experience and I have come to agree with something Heather Poland said at the OPT OUT party. She said, "I've always incorporated critical thinking into my classroom." This is something a human does better than a software program, pick up the current thread of a program and tie it into a lesson--and open it out, and out to "upcycle" and "landfill"...

To All, I remember when my elementary school teacher would read one, just one chapter of Charlotte's Web every day after recess. I couldn't wait for the next day to find out what happened. That experience gave me my lifelong love of narrative, of what will happen next. No one had to interrupt with a mandatory script and ask, "Now children who is the protagonist?" The beating of our hearts told us who the protagonist was.

eastlaker, I always value your thoughts on education. I know you do a great deal of research and have even recommended sites to me that have turned out to be valuable resources. It is my understanding that the standardized tests, which are given in the spring, don't make it back to the teacher anything useful for the students. I think San Diego Unified may be leading the way. The whole resolution can be found on trustee Kevin Beiser's facebook.

conamara, You bring up the point of overflow. I did quote one parent in the article above and I spoke with another teacher at the first meeting who told me that Silver Wing is not underenrolled, in fact, they are overenrolled. So it doesn't make sense why they should have to give up classroom space; how will they grow? Someone also pointed out, I believe it was at the board meeting, that Montgomery High School is within walking distance of Silver Wing. As taxpayers' money is paying for CVLCC high school--through the COP (loan for construction) and ADA, taxpayers are also paying through bond construction money to refurbish Montgomery High school only recently. If as one blog comment says is correct, parents have moved into the Silver Wing area to go to CVLCC high...well then we start a new cycle of over/under enrollment with Montgomery High. It would be helpful to the taxpayers if the two districts could co-ordinate.

Road repair dilemma in Chula Vista

Woodchuck, You've raised a question that puzzles me too. How is it that we used to pay for all the roads and infrastructure ... and be in pretty good shape...without special taxes such as Mello Roos? And as Hopkins' points out, how are we going to fix the roads if less tax money is collected at the pump? As homes in the area have gone up in value, I assume the city and the school districts have more money to work with...but...

Bvavsvev, Mello Roos "My question is, where are we in the amount owed v. paid? " This a question that concerns me too. We need to get straight where each CFD district is , with the city, with Sweetwater and with CVESD. If the CFD is finished, how much is in the account. How will the schools and the roads be maintained when the tax is paid in full and the account is empty. Will the money of the new CFDs coming on line flow into the old CFDs? It would be good if all the agencies had a forum and presented the corresponding budgets, charts, and plans for the future.
