Apropos of nothing and everything I like Diane Ravitch's holistic approach to education: "Discerning, affluent parents demand schools with a full curriculum, an experienced staff, a rich program in the arts, a library, a well-maintained campus, and small classes. As a society, we must do whatever is possible to extend the same advantages to children who do not have them."

erupting, In response to a December 3 request for the data-sharing agreement and related materials the district promised a further response no later than January 6. I am aware of a number of concerns about the startup of the charter.

Few details on Sweetwater district's student-data-sharing deal

oneoftheteachers, i have heard discussions at the board meetings about the after school and Saturday programs and whether or not students are even being taught ... or taught in the subjects they missed. It is my recollection they were not. If high attendance scores are garnered through afterschool and Saturday school...I'm not sure how useful that is for students. I note that the emails (only some of which were posted) include a reference to auditing CPMs attendance. You ask some good questions.

Sweetwater school district invites more suspicion

Woodchuck, It's my view that blogging (on several newspapers) is only one dimension of what this Sweetwater group do. In the years since I have been covering the district, I have seen this group at every single board meeting. They study the agenda, pull items--make serious useful comments to the board. I have seen new people become involved--the group expands not exponentially, but it does grow. I have seen this group contact every politician in the county--more recently they have contacted people nationally. I have seen them go to the county board of ed meetings, I have seen some go door to door (for example around the dirt issue). While I don't always agree with every thing they do, I have never seen a phenomenon like them--they model the kind of civic engagement we hope this country is built on. (BTW: The young mothers who are currently opposing Common Core and more specifically the mandated electronic testing that will accompany it--might just rival this group in their level of commitment. ) Perhaps, it's not about them going to the community--perhaps it's about the community coming to the board meetings. I was trying to get the right audio and mount it from board docs, but right now I couldn't get them to play. You will find Lopez's comment under the asset presentation. Lopez asked Mr. Calhoun to name who else was appointed and who did the appointing. I will try to flesh this discussion out in a longer piece soon. Susan

Margaret, Thanks your comment and for reminding me. I am studying an ASB's year-long expenditure right now. There are obviously rules regarding expenditures, but I am not familiar with them. Some of the things I see listed don't look like what students would choose, rather they look like admin choices. I know kids nowadays are paying for field trips and uniforms -- I'm wondering who the decision makers are and how it all works. Tips appreciated.

Visduh, You make a very good point. Why not spruce up? And why not get those kids some fans? This all should have been handled so differently. We'll see what shakes out about the CFO. I haven't found the story but I understand there was something on about the CFO leaving and also about the district being audited-- not the usual kind of audit where the district selects a company. If I find the story, I'll post it.
