Chili's
Chili's has a new dessert. The chocolate chip cookie molten cake. It's unlike most desserts you see on restaurant menus because it actually comes out bigger than what you would expect by looking at it's picture on the menu. This is definitely for sharing and it is delicious. They take some cake mix and bake a chocolate chip volcano shaped loaf. Then they put vanilla ice cream on top and top it off with some chocolate shell. The inside of the loaf is also filled with warm chocolate and when you dip into the side, it spills onto the plate and turns into a chocolate lovers paradise. Anybody who likes chocolate is going to love this.

Knowing
Creepy and unnerving. The movie’s premise was interesting enough. A girl from 1959 hears voices and is able to predict the dates, locations, and number of people killed in various tragedies for the next 50 years. I thought this was going to be more of a sci-fi type film until about an hour into the movie it morphed into some kind of strange scientology lesson involving whisper people and verses from scripture. The action sequences with a plane crash and a subway disaster are very realistic and very scary to watch. The only problem was that the ending could have been done so much better.

Race to Witch Mountain
An entertaining movie for kids and the kids trapped inside adult bodies. The aliens crash in the Nevada desert and are looking for some type of orb to show to the others on their planet that they can sustain life and not invade Earth. Along the way they enlist the services of a taxi driver played by The Rock. The kid aliens have superhuman powers and spend the entire film being chases by some alien assassin en route to Witch Mountain where they spacecraft is being kept. There was not a whole lot of substance to the film but it was watchable if you didn’t take it too seriously.

Duplicity
This is one of those movies that you would have to watch a half dozen times to understand everything that is going on. Everybody is playing everybody and nobody’s real intentions are revealed until the very end of the movie. It is a story about corporate intelligence, counter-intelligence, and counter-counter-intelligence. Julia Roberts and Clive Owen could have had better chemistry but they played believable spies. It left me a little confused but I liked it because of its good screenplay.

Two Lovers
This stinkfest would have been suited for the Lifetime network instead of the big screen. If Gwyneth Paltrow and Joaquin Phoenix weren't in this film then there is no way it makes it to theaters. Easily the most depressing and boring movie of the year so far. The opening scene starts out with Joaquin Phoenix jumping into the bay and trying to drown himself. That is how I felt after I walked out of the theater after seeing this thing. The story had no substance and there were numerous awkward situations and uneasy dialogue throughout. It's unfortunate that Joaquin Phoenix chose this movie to be last because he is capable of so much more.

Watchmen
What a big jumbled mess this turned out to be. I had mixed feeling on whether to do a good or bad review of this one. On the good side, you have some amazing visuals and creative directing. On the bad side, you have a mish-mash story that jumps all over the place and never fully explains the origin of the Watchmen or what their goal is. At over 2 1/2 hours long, I expected more than this. This is as adult a comic as I've ever seen and not at all for kids. There is plenty of blood, carnage, profanity, nudity, and sex. There are lots of action sequences akin to the Matrix movies with slow motion karate kicks and bullets penetrating flesh. Main characters die and the ending left a lot to be desired. The lone bright spot was the acting performance of Jackie Earle Haley who plays Rorschach. His deep gravely voice is reminiscent of the one done by Christian Bale in the Batman movies and strikes fear into all those unlucky enough to hear it. The best line of the movie comes from a prison scene when he warns his fellow prisoners that, "I am not locked in here with you. You are locked in here with me!"

My Girl
So I was sitting at home today and this was on TV. I hadn't seen it in a while and it made me wonder what happened to Anna Chlumsky? It was a fairly decent debut for her which she followed up with a less than spectacular sequel but then she faded from the sporlight. Was it another child star burnt out on Hollywood or was she simply taking a break to just be a kid and grow up? Macaulay Culkin hasn't done much of note these days either. Why do child actor's find making that transition to grown up roles so difficult. Drew Barrymore did it and has been successful.

Olive Garden
Is there anything more satisfying than those delicious breadsticks that they give you with your meal? It may be sacrilegious to some people but I can say that the breadsticks at the Olive Garden beat the breadsticks at Pat&Oscar's any day of the week. I tried the orange cream soda today with my meal and it was excellent. It was like drinking an orange creamsicle. Definitely worth a try.

Downtown Changes
Ya, so I was wrong about the new shiny highrise on Broadway between 8th and 9th. A couple of days ago a work crew was out there breaking up the cement and try to level out the dirt that was left from the demolition a month ago. Then 2 days ago an asphalt team was out there paving the whole half block. Yesterday, I walked by and there were parking spaces painted on the asphalt. What a waste of space. They didn't even bother to level out the ground first. You can still see where the front doors of the old buildings used to be and the there are some spaces where you have to park at a strange angle. It looks like a budget job to me. All this did was expand the other parking lot that was already adjacent to the building. We don't need more parking lots downtown. There is plenty of parking already.

He's Just Not That into You
One of the rare instances (or exceptions to the rule as we hear in the movie) when the movie was better than the trailer made it out to be. It's always a pleasant surprise when that happens but most of the time you see a trailer and think, "Wow, that looks good," only to find out that you just wasted $20 and 2 hours of your time watching something painfully bad. This movie was shot as part mock-umentary, part love story. You have 5 women and men all interconnected and in different stages of relationships. They experience all the drama, love, and pain that are caused by those relationships and their characters grow to learn things by the film's end. Ladies will like this movie because of the different storylines. Guys will like this movie because of the A list actresses including a hot seductive Scarlett Johansson.

Anybody who likes chocolate is going to love this.— April 4, 2009 4:41 p.m.
The only problem was that the ending could have been done so much better.— March 31, 2009 7:48 p.m.
There was not a whole lot of substance to the film but it was watchable if you didn’t take it too seriously.— March 27, 2009 9:52 p.m.
It left me a little confused but I liked it because of its good screenplay.— March 27, 2009 9:46 p.m.
It's unfortunate that Joaquin Phoenix chose this movie to be last because he is capable of so much more.— March 8, 2009 7:48 p.m.
You are locked in here with me!"— March 7, 2009 10:23 p.m.
Drew Barrymore did it and has been successful.— March 2, 2009 12:05 a.m.
Definitely worth a try.— March 1, 2009 11:57 p.m.
There is plenty of parking already.— February 26, 2009 11:48 p.m.
Guys will like this movie because of the A list actresses including a hot seductive Scarlett Johansson.— February 21, 2009 10:28 p.m.
