Todd Gloria wields the ax, firing most of Filner staff
It seems to me that Mr. Aguirre might be the only one who might have the name recognition to overcome the pall that this episode among others has cast over voting at all. It took a Presidential election cycle to get enough voters off the couch and come out to elect Mr. Filner, just like it takes a Christmas or Easter Mass to get many good Christians into Church. Many folks are reeling after having Prop 8 overturned and now this. A special election with just the one question on it will most likely have single digit voter turnout percentages. Since the Progressive hope of many has crashed and burned, the sentiment will be, "Why Bother?"— September 1, 2013 8:57 p.m.
Scott Marks scripts Kensington Video’s story
Gawd! I need to find my Kensington Video Membership card! I haven't been there for too long.— August 31, 2013 8:02 p.m.
Did interim mayor Todd Gloria have the authority to rescind stop-use order for Jack in the Box?
Bob Filner issued the "Stop Work Order" to get back at the Large Corporation who was ramming an unwanted and illegal drive-thru down the citizens' throats. A "Business Friendly" politician is a bought-and-paid-for puppet of the big money developers, and Bob tried to stop the continuous selling of the city out from under the people who live in the neighborhood. This was NOT a "remodel" in any sense of the word, it is a blatant bait-and-switch of the purpose of the permit.— August 31, 2013 7:46 p.m.
Into Mexico
I used to work in TJ in the BS years (*Before Sentri*). Even though San Ysidro was closer **It was always faster** to drive to Otay Mesa to cross the border. Like your father I would be a little disoriented there now. All you have to do to stop the window washers is to frown in an exaggerated grimace while shaking your head and wag your index finger from side-to-side through the windshield. *Use the face you'd show to a kitten who just peed on the carpet.* They understand that, no words needed. Keep all windows closed! An open window is like a teller at the bank to a street vendor.— July 25, 2013 6:45 p.m.

New skate park for City Heights Community Center
> "I'll believe it when I see it," Bobby says. "They talk about this all the time and we're still skating here…. Tony Hawk people talk, Black Box people talk, YMCA people talk. We still skate here." I applaud all the effort that has gone into this endeavor so far. I would like to see this thing built, and I'm an old guy. The problem is that it takes a LOT of talking before there can be observable action on any project on the public dime. It is difficult for young people who don't have a lot of time left to be young... I've grown old during the time it has taken City Heights to progress this far; from the slum it was while we waited 30 years for the 15 to get built.— June 25, 2013 10:58 p.m.
Horse Croquet
> I share my personal observations and experiences. If that's not reporting, I don't know what is. I observe you reported on a **cocktail party** that had horses for ambiance instead of a string quartet. > “Oh, honey, nobody watches the game, at least not that one,” Sounds like every party *I've* been to.— June 20, 2013 8:47 p.m.
A Hard Place
> When I consciously think about wrongdoings and suffering, the empathy becomes overwhelming; apathy is my protective mechanism. My antidote for this ennui to consider as you have, the facts of the matter, and my relationship to those facts. Sometimes the best thing I can do is **just stay out of the way**. To me *not interfering* is also contributing!— June 12, 2013 5:06 p.m.
A good man has died
I am so sorry for your (and San Diego's) loss. While each of us has experiences unique to ourselves, I experienced a similar senseless loss with similar emotions a year-and-a half ago. I have empathy for you and your community of friends. It sounds to me like your parents also have personal experience with this sort of loss, and I'm beginning to think it may be a lesser known rite-of-passage into the community of persons of a certain age that you have been inducted into earlier than most. You are not alone, and I hope you can find some comfort in that.— May 9, 2013 8:40 a.m.
Gun grab
People who want to bring some thought into reversing this killing process are stymied by the paradox of "individualists" who are conforming to what they see others doing. As long as fear is the predominant emotion, we're all stuck. Nobody thinks through the unintended consequences.— April 5, 2013 8:27 a.m.
