Movie Pet Peeves
The physics-defying stunts are the worst. Nothing ruins a movie for me like an obviously impossible stunt. The bus jumping over the freeway gap in Speed is the notorious example, but I could go on and on. Another thing that bugs me is when a movie loses track of it's tone. Is it a realistic movie, or is it a crazy comedy? It can't be both. Half of Superbad was good, but the crazy half with the cops was unrealistic and dumb. Either make the whole movie like that, or, if you want to make a good movie, make a whole movie like the other half, but you can't mix up the tone.— August 5, 2009 3:20 p.m.
Pedestrians' Progress
These pedestrian bridges are an amazing waste of money. %4.5 MILLION dollars! Hire a crossing guard to work before and after school, pay him $10 an hour, and it would take about 450 years to cost this much money. But it's easy to spend when nobody's accountable. It's not real money.— August 5, 2009 4:32 a.m.
Driving Drunk Is Not Easy
My point with the article was that if environment is what causes behavior, wouldn't more than 15% of kids end up in gangs? In a "gang infested area". The 15% who do, do so because they want to behave that way. So if they can identify some indicators to pick out the kids prone to this behavior (I'd start with a diagnosis of ADD) they are likely to have more success then the "shotgun" approach does. But honestly I'm still skeptical about how much success they can have making someone behave in a way other than they're driven to behave.— August 5, 2009 4:19 a.m.
911 -- What's Your Emergency?
Doesn't Spago only have one G? I think you're mixing it up with spaghetti-o. Completely different thing.— August 4, 2009 2:32 a.m.
Bad Cops and a Bad Bank Teller
Josh if those Florida cops did what you say, they will DEFINITELY be charged, and rightfully so. Throw the book at 'em. As you pointed out, they will have violated the public trust, which cops HAVE TO HAVE to be able to do their job. There's no place on the police force for anyone like this. As for the bank teller, while I'm sympathetic, I think the bank did the right thing. Just think if a teller decided to put up a fight and a robber started shooting, and some innocent bystander gets shot. It just can't happen. Having said that, maybe the bank should rehire him as a security guard. I think he missed his calling.— August 4, 2009 2:22 a.m.
Helping the Homeless
Josh, they are absolutely "choosing" to live the life they're living, and personally, I don't like it. I don't like having to worry about the guy standing outside my window at the light, I don't like having to worry about the crazy guy on the sidewalk I have to walk past, I don't like having to see guys sleeping in doorways, camping on the sidewalk, and squating in the park, because they would rather live from bottle to bottle or pipe to pipe. Ask yourself, could they "choose" to live that life if no one enabled it?— August 4, 2009 1:52 a.m.
Get a Leg Up
Storyteller, if you were truly hurt then I retract what I said. I judged from your words that you were just trying for a payday, (you wouldn't be the first) and I wanted to make the point that that payday is paid for by all of us. I won't bother disecting what you said to show you why I thought what I did. By all means if you (and your daughter) were actually physically hurt you deserve to be compensated. Hope that clears it up.— August 4, 2009 1:41 a.m.
Get a Leg Up
Storyteller, sorry if the truth hurts, but you needed to hear it.— August 3, 2009 3:58 p.m.
Helping the Homeless
You guys have good intentions, but you'd be better off getting it out of your system volunteering at your neighborhood school, or doing a beach cleanup or charity walk on the weekend. I don't believe in doing anything that enables or encourages the homeless. You're doing more harm than good.— August 3, 2009 3:56 p.m.
