6-Year-Old Evicted
I've always wondered, if you walked down the street of one of these places, if the peace and quiet is broken by TV's turned all the way up, because the old people can't hear so good.— October 29, 2009 12:52 a.m.
Who Killed Richard Swink?
Everyone, including Fred likes to cite the ideals our country was founded on, and say we aren't living up to them. Well one of those ideals is "give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to be free". We live up to that by the millions every year. Want to know why we have the highest rates of violence and incarceration? Look no further. We give people the freedom to make their choice of how to live their life. But if they choose to be a predator on society, we hold them responsible for those choices. BTW this also goes a long way toward explaining the mediocre students coming out of our schools. Kids get to make their choices too.— October 29, 2009 12:48 a.m.

Fred, although I recognize nuggets of truth in what you say, you exagerate beyond reason. "Monitoring innocent citizens is common place"-REALLY? COMMONPLACE? REMEMBER BUSH IS GONE. "prosecutors and police have practical impunity for crimes",-JUST BECAUSE YOU HATE COPS DOESN'T MEAN THEY OPPERATE WITH IMPUNITY. IN FACT IT'S BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU, WHO ARE READY TO BURY THEM GIVEN THE CHANCE, THAT THEY DON'T "and machine gun toting stormtroopers are swarming in to bust up medical marijuana collectives"-ALTHOUGH I'M FOR LEGALIZATION, IT'S NOT LEGAL YET. THE BATTLE CONTINUES. ALTHOUGH I DON'T AGREE WITH THE RAIDS, COMPARING THEM TO NAZIS EXPOSES THE SILLINESS OF YOUR WORLD-VIEW. (Or were you comparing them to Star Wars characters?— October 29, 2009 12:37 a.m.

Refried, although I respect your defense of free speech, I think you go a little too far. But I'll defend to the death your right to be wrong.— October 29, 2009 12:26 a.m.
Who Killed Richard Swink?
AG, I just saw a film at the Asian Film Festival about a little girl in Beijing who loses her bus pass, and has to try and get home by herself. It was interesting to watch people on the street pass her by and ignore her, and a little boy with her, as they asked for help from passers-by, the way people do to homeless adults here. I've never been to China, but I assume the movie is reflecting a realistic situation. I have been to Mexico, however, and I've seen the way they treat their people, especially their homeless children, and although an admittedly small sample, so far America's looking pretty good in comparison.— October 29, 2009 12:23 a.m.

Pete, your problem is you get off on being offensive. That just makes you an a$$. Take a stand on principle. You can support free speech without shouting "fire" in the crowded theatre. Or exposing kids to ideas they're not ready for. You like to post links, so here's one for you. You support free speech by speaking out against people like this: http://politiken.dk/newsinenglish/article819041.e…— October 28, 2009 2:47 a.m.
Stupid Cops -- The No Habla English Edition
I'm of two minds on this. On the one hand, they design road signs to be understandable whether or not you speak the language. This seems like a good thing. I know I'd appreciate it if I was a visitor in another country. Also, even I know "licencia", so it's not that hard for a cop to convey the basics. If more thorough questioning is required, then by all means, take them down to the station to get some translation assistance. Ticketing them BECAUSE they don't speak English is assinine (misspelling intended). ON THE OTHER HAND, Teddy Roosevelt said it better than I can: "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace or origin. But this is predicated upon the person becoming in every facet an American and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one loyalty, and that is a loyalty to the American people."— October 28, 2009 2:27 a.m.
It's Not About The Uniforms
Do you have anything nice to say about this teacher? Or are you just one of those people who wants to find fault? Discipline is necessary to being an effective teacher. If the worst thing this teacher did was mistakenly punish kids for not turning in their homework, I'd say this teacher is doing alright, all things considered..— October 28, 2009 1:37 a.m.
