Tijuana, graveyard of the godforsaken gringos
Prostitution is not legal, John, I promise you that. The licenses and taxes aren't constitutionally correct. Otherwise, the girls would be all over, legally plying their trade. It's simply controlled. If you want to pen a story about it, my advice would be to start with the judicial in Tijuana and work backwards. I believe the perspective would be more in line with how things work in Baja. If you're serious about that article, try it backwards, I bet it would be rewarding - if not with the Reader then elsewhere. But try working in reverse, it's tough to get interviews at first, but sometimes persistence pays off.

Tijuana, graveyard of the godforsaken gringos
Prostitution is not legal in Mexico. It is simply tolerated and controlled because the authorities would rather keep it all in one place, confined, which makes perfect sense for Mexico based on how life operates there. In other words, they would rather not see the girls parading themselves near a schoolyard or a shopping mall. So far as the comparisons of the stories, I can understand your frustration, but you have two writers coming at Tijuana from two different angles. If you go down there to visit and keep your eyes open to avert trouble, you'll probably be just fine. However, if you live there and are out and about on a daily basis, it's like anywhere you might find yourself in a sketchy environment, you'll see your fair share of crime. But mostly, everyone's moral compass spins in a different direction. The older single gringos don't have any ties to any relationship unless they're dumb enough to believe that a slender, beautiful, 23-year old gal thinks some retired balding gringo with a potbelly is the sexiest thing ever. The old ballplayer, for instance, will tell you that he doesn't pay for sex, he pays them to leave afterward. And there is a lot of truth in that even after taking one's tongue out of one's cheek. Enjoy the story from the perspective it's written, because to do a comparison is always going to be disappointing. The attitude of a story never tells a complete story, that's never the point. Twain's version of the Mississippi River wasn't everyone's version, and it certainly wasn't the complete story, but it was a damned good story, nevertheless. I'm sure that Faulkner would have done it differently, and it still probably would have been good.

New radar installed at South Carlsbad State Beach
I'm giving a broad and short explanation here, ed. I realize that early RADAR technology led to the modern microwave in which we currently heat up our frozen enchiladas, but you summed it up below just fine. My point is that the RADAR used in this exercise isn't going to fry up any brain cells, the applications are far removed from that sort of thing. RADAR doesn't use microwave technology, but that it's the other way around. Microwave technology came about as a result of RADAR.

Dodgers rest their stars and Padres prevail

Diamondbacks get by Padres in extras
Incidentally, when I grew up watching ball in the '70's into the '80's, a starting pitcher with an ERA of under three was considered good. These days, it's under four. Cashner's ERA is outstanding.
— September 26, 2013 midnight
Diamondbacks get by Padres in extras
Sure. Earned Run Average is the average amount of EARNED (not by errors or other such anomalies) runs scored assuming the pitcher pitched a nine inning game. In other words, if a pitcher has an ERA of 3.00, it means that over 9 innings, the pitcher allows an average of three earned runs. Andrew Cashner is finished for the year, so we can take his ERA for the 2013 season is 3.09. Cash pitched 175 innings and allowed 60 earned runs. Take 60 (runs) divided by 175 (innings) and you get .343 (rounded up) runs per inning. Multiply that by 9 (inning) and you get 3.087 and baseball rounds that up to 3.09. Hope that helps, and it's not an idiot question at all. ERA is probably the most important statistic a starting pitcher can have, even more so in this day and age than actual wins.

Tijuana, graveyard of the godforsaken gringos
Good stuff. Next time you do a piece this long, you might think about twisting the characters around some of the old watering holes. Personally, I'd rather leave an empty caguama bottle on the spot you spit your final bit than a black wreath. I would, of course, have previously consumed it in your honor.

RADAR uses radio waves, not microwaves.

Magazine tells clearly how NFL fleeces taxpayer
Again, if the Federal, State, and Local governments would just legalize gambling, they would more than overcome any losses from the NFL (or any other sports franchise machine) being tax exempt. The NFL, or rather, interest in the NFL is driven by wagering on the games. Simply open casinos near stadiums and let the money flow in. A shiny new stadium could be financed by gambling alone.

But try working in reverse, it's tough to get interviews at first, but sometimes persistence pays off.— September 29, 2013 8:08 p.m.
I'm sure that Faulkner would have done it differently, and it still probably would have been good.— September 29, 2013 2:34 a.m.

Hang out in the Nuevo Perico once in a while in the afternoons. You never know who you'll run into in there.— September 29, 2013 2 a.m.
Microwave technology came about as a result of RADAR.— September 26, 2013 4:28 a.m.
Dodgers rest their stars and Padres prevail

Diamondbacks get by Padres in extras
Incidentally, when I grew up watching ball in the '70's into the '80's, a starting pitcher with an ERA of under three was considered good. These days, it's under four. Cashner's ERA is outstanding.— September 26, 2013 midnight
ERA is probably the most important statistic a starting pitcher can have, even more so in this day and age than actual wins.— September 25, 2013 11:55 p.m.

Good stuff. Next time you do a piece this long, you might think about twisting the characters around some of the old watering holes. Personally, I'd rather leave an empty caguama bottle on the spot you spit your final bit than a black wreath. I would, of course, have previously consumed it in your honor.— September 25, 2013 1:01 p.m.

A shiny new stadium could be financed by gambling alone.— September 22, 2013 9:59 p.m.
