Scandal-raising questions at U-T San Diego

I was hoping someone would cover this in the Reader. The thing that is unfathomable is that Manchester buys all other well-read dailies in San Diego County, and now threatens to fold things up unless people subscribe to the U-T. There is no real journalism left in that newspaper, much less a hint of integrity.

General’s disregard for the warrior

Well, first of all, they moved him out of Tijuana and into Tecate, and that's a bit of a bus ride for me or I would go interview him. Second, the Mexican border officials apparently have video that contradicts the Marine's story. And third, his truck contained a mattress and a ladder. Not "personal belongings" as media keeps repeating. As usual, everyone wants to scoop the story instead of getting it right, and readers often jump the gun (pun intended) with their reactions when this occurs.

Tijuana is a large place, Bob. Let us know what *part* of Tijuana these events occurred. I wouldn't be surprised to see a trend in that direction, according to specific locations.

Union-Tribune circulation takes a hit

I don't think it's a lack of scooping stories that makes the U-T continue to lose money, I think it's the product in general. I can't read that paper. The idea that scooping a story is more important than getting the story RIGHT, is a bad idea. The fact that the U-T can do neither is why they are struggling, in my opinion. They still have some good people there, barely. But it's obvious that those people no longer make decisions. And that's sad for San Diego.

Mexican sports agent swings at MLB

His gripe is obviously with the Red Devils and the Mexican Leagues. No idea why he's dragging this through the U.S. Courts. This didn't go anywhere over a year ago, I fail to see what's changed now. If it's filed in Mexico, the case won't be heard for a decade, that's the only thing I can think of.

Ted Leitner has on-air meltdown at SDSU game

I've heard Leitner go off far worse than this. Security are mostly under-trained high-school grads charged with the authority to become obtrusive and abusive whenever they wish. Standard security protocol is to check the baggage of media at the media entrance and then identify the baggage as having been checked with a color-coated, temporary attachment. I sometimes bring luggage with me into the press box if I've come from a plane and have no time to store the suit case before covering the event. Many media members do, it's a common occurrence. If this didn't happen in Leitner's case, then that is the fault of security. Security was, indeed, wrong in this instance. However, it would have been wise of Leitner to have handled it a bit differently, like go to station identification, get off of the air for 15 seconds, and deal with the situation in that time span.

Manchester rumored to drop Austin hotel

So, why doesn't Dougie just buy up the the Austin American-Statesman and the Austin Chronicle, insist that the writers scribe garbage columns about how badly the City of Austin needs this hotel, and sit back and wait for public opinion to change? Isn't that what he's doing in San Diego?

Tijuana police get the wrong man…repeatedly

This sort of thing saddens me. See, I've lived here for over two decades and have never encountered these problems. And, you can't get any more "Gringo" than I am. Granted, I don't wear baggy clothing, mainly because I don't like to wear baggy clothing but also because it advertises a certain mindset that mopes seem to share. And granted, as much as I love whiskey, I don't carry around an open container because that would be illegal. And, even as a journalist, I know better than to photograph cops here, it's for *their* protection, you know, since they are fighting organized crime on a daily basis and are constant targets for the really, really, bad, bad guys. Mexico is a great ride if you simply use your head. Dress conservatively, don't walk around with an open bottle of whiskey, and keep the cell phone in your pocket unless you're calling a pal. Mexico isn't the U.S., and why anyone would think it should be is beyond my comprehension.
