Online poker refugee Bryce Daifuku lives across from Tijuana country club
Interesting story, Chad. As much as I enjoy some Texas Hold'em, no way could I do this for big stakes. I used to play the horses and I was very successful at it, but with poker you don't know the other players hole cards so you have little notion if any of what they're betting. With paramutual wagering, you calculate the track take and taxes and you're left knowing what everyone else is betting. For me, it's a less scary risk putting yourself on a horse. For those poker players, they have brass balls I'll never have.

"This is a newspaper, not a low-level grammar class."
Preventative. I'm at a complete loss to figure how that word could possibly piss anyone off. So many things go on, this planet is so full of trouble. You can find plenty of worthwhile screw-ups to get mad about, no need to go on about a word that confuses you for whatever reason. Preventative. I'm about to make that my new motto.

That includes you,
Reader!
Hello, S. Woods! I've lived in Baja for almost 23 years now. It's no longer 4 hours, if you time it properly it's about 20 minutes. It was REALLY horrible after 9/11, and that extended out until recently, but since they opened more car lanes at the border, you get more people driving over (and the wait times are much better) and it makes the pedestrian wait shorter as well. You will be surprised at the difference.

Tam Hoang, Coronado teacher, recounts his voyage to English
Very well done, Tam. Great piece.

At 18 months old, he was one of the youngest people with type 1 diabetes in San Diego County
I had a whole thing typed about her ordeal, but the internet ate it. We actually found an endocrinologist here in Mexico who is excellent. He speaks English and Spanish, and to hell with insurance because he charges $50 per visit, which is reasonable, and she's not crashing at all now (he spends a good 1/4 to 1/2 hour with his patients, too!). To the point about long-acting, she took that with short acting for a good while until one day we ran out of long acting. I was to go get some for her the next day, but she told me that she wanted to try short-acting to see what would happen. For her, it's working out well. That doesn't mean that it always will or that anyone else should try that, but she's easily keeping it under control. Diet and exercise and a healthy weight are factors in all of this. Also, we've found that low stress helps greatly.

At 18 months old, he was one of the youngest people with type 1 diabetes in San Diego County
My gal's mother died from it and my gal has had it from when she 19. Has NOTHING to do with eating too much sweets. There were all sorts of stuff I didn't understand about Type I. When she first came to live with me in Mexico she was taking a shot of long-acting insulin in the morning and short-acting as required and still spiking and crashing uncontrollably. The long-lasting stuff comes in a bottle, you take an actual syringe, draw out however many mg., and inject yourself in the stomach. The short acting stuff comes in nifty plastic containers and you simply dial the gadget attached to it and inject - the needles are also smaller. But the bitch comes when - out of nowhere - the blood sugar spikes so rapidly a grown adult doesn't feel it, doesn't think about taking a blood sugar test, and then goes catatonic. I'll save that story, she made me out to be more of a hero than I actually was that day. Now, she's under control, doesn't even need the long-acting stuff anymore, just short-acting. And to think that at one time it was so bad she had to wear a pump. Kinda cool you wrote this, I would have never thought of it.

Post-coital knife attack
I would love to leave this one alone, but it's difficult since I live RIGHT HERE. There are much better blurbs on this corner. This really didn't even cause a stir here. Bob, you ought to come to Zona Norte and spend a day and an evening here, you'll find much more to write about. It's a fairly controlled insanity.

You have to wonder
Rico, I have to disagree with you when you state that the Otay Mesa pedestrian crossing works "fairly well" in comparison with the San Ysidro pedestrian crossing. Both are horrible, but in my thousands of crossings, Otay Mesa is often worse. It has taken me between three and four hours to cross there on foot. Much less people crossing there, but much more scrutiny so they take much longer with every person attempting to enter the U.S. The problem lies in the lack of proper training combined with the agency encouraging long lines when their budget comes around each year so they can ask for more money because they claim to be understaffed, hence the long lines. Meanwhile, 20 or 30 officers stand around with their thumbs up their bums while only 4 officers are manning 20 booths and 3 of them are on break. It's a money grab at our expense, pal.

Top 12 San Diego breweries
Good piece, Brandon. Not to complain TOO much, but there are a lot of craft breweries here in Baja you should look into. I recommend Psycho Border next time you write a piece on this sort of thing. Their beer is fantastic, especially their darks (they have an "Imperial Stout" that kicks some serious butt). This might be a good future feature for you. There are a lot of small craft breweries here that do great work. Just put the ingredients in the trunk, drive across, and brew. Then ship. It's really interesting how they flip the pancake here.
— October 30, 2014 2:11 a.m.
Because the governor wouldn't need the Red Cross
I'm busy. Instead, why don't you tell everyone the difference between decriminalization and illegal? You're apparently a genius about Mexican law. Enrich us! Prostitution isn't legal in Mexico. If it were, there would be no need for a Zona de Tolerancia. Prostitution is illegal, pimping is illegal, and running a whore house is illegal. Okay, now, give us the penal code that makes prostitution legal. Take a year, you won't find it. I would send you a useless link about State laws, but since Mexico is a Republic, the States are limited as to how far outside of the box they get to roam. I'm not going to hold your hand, you go figure out why prostitution is illegal here, yet there are certain areas where it's permitted. Easy proof of that is to drive down to 5 y 10 and beyond and tell me how many hookers you see. None. Regardless of sporting a health card, they would be arrested. Now, anyone who lives here knows these things. You obviously don't.

For those poker players, they have brass balls I'll never have.— May 21, 2015 12:16 p.m.
I'm about to make that my new motto.— April 15, 2015 9:31 p.m.
That includes you, Reader!
Hello, S. You will be surprised at the difference.— April 1, 2015 10:37 p.m.
Tam Hoang, Coronado teacher, recounts his voyage to English
Very well done, Tam. Great piece.— March 12, 2015 1:46 a.m.
Also, we've found that low stress helps greatly.— January 15, 2015 5:48 p.m.

Kinda cool you wrote this, I would have never thought of it.— January 14, 2015 2:18 p.m.
It's a fairly controlled insanity.— December 8, 2014 5:47 p.m.
It's a money grab at our expense, pal.— December 5, 2014 3:27 p.m.
Then ship. It's really interesting how they flip the pancake here.— October 30, 2014 2:11 a.m.
You obviously don't.— October 21, 2014 7:33 p.m.
