Hikers stumble upon marijuana plantation in Cuyamaca State Park
Another good observation.
— February 15, 2012 2:14 p.m.
Letters
Wow, all I have to say is that when Maiden of Camelot takes the time to write in with a concern pertaining the the Reader, I take note of it. As a very occasional contributor to "stringer stories", I shall make an effort to comply by looking out for material more worthy of a police blotter than of a church bulletin. Anyone out there who feels the need to light a couch on fire in the center divider of Interstate Five or commit some other petty but bizarre crime, please send me a message, I'm all over that. Seriously. The "Letters" section of the San Diego Reader is my very favorite part of it (apologies to Dennis Travers from Downtown), the letters rarely fail to put a smile on my face every Wednesday afternoon. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some gardening to do, thanks to the astute observations and stellar math skills of Bob Dorn, I've discovered that my, uh, "crops" are worth far more than what I had previously thought. I love you people, I sincerely and honestly love you people who write letters to the Reader. Please never stop doing that, it would be as disappointing for me as the fake Matthew Alice is for Daniel Kian Mc Kiernan. And if anyone happens upon the real Matthew Alice, let him know that some rat-bastard imposter has apparently hijacked his awesome column. I'm sure that Daniel would be grateful.

Hikers stumble upon marijuana plantation in Cuyamaca State Park
I very much agree in general with all of this. I guess my line - I mean we all draw philosophical lines, right? - is that I'm not prone to compromise when it comes to freedom. I don't have any issue with anyone using any drug, whether recreational or medicinal, even though I'm not prone at all toward medicating myself with anything other than booze. And I do that a lot more slowly and moderately than I allow my reputation to become tarnished by admitting to it. I just have a difficult time saying, "Well, THIS drug is perfectly okay but THAT one should be outlawed." We are responsible to ourselves more than anything. That's an awesome responsibility that I don't take lightly. And in return, presuming that all human beings value that responsibility as I do, all I want is the freedom to make these decisions on my own. If heroin was legal, I wouldn't use it. But I really do face that same decision regardless of its legality. I don't think that any of us need a government to decide that for us. And I reckon that's why I can't draw that line between one drug and another. I just think that freedom is absolute.

Hikers stumble upon marijuana plantation in Cuyamaca State Park
Michael, I'm very curious, how would you have viewed this story if, say, rather than stumbling onto a marijuana grove on public land, the hikers had stumbled onto a large tomato growing operation? Or perhaps even a large encampment of migrants with no documentation confirming citizenship or any right to be in the U.S? It's an honest question, not a rebuttal of your comment, but I'm curious if you're notching the DEA on the same level as perhaps the Department of Agriculture or the Homeland Security Department.

Hikers stumble upon marijuana plantation in Cuyamaca State Park
I very much respect the idea behind "medical" marijuana, but I truly think that people should sit back and think about this in terms of qualifying the use of any substance. I don't think that anyone should feel obligated to explain themselves in terms of WHY they choose to consume ANYTHING. It shouldn't matter if people take bong hits for no particular reason. I wouldn't recommend that type of a lifestyle, but who am I to tell you that you can't do it? Carrying that forward, who is government to tell you that you can't do it? In other words, how really free are human beings in 2012? Frankly, I'm baffled as to how any drug is controlled in a supposedly free country. But getting back to the original story, I'm totally against growing anything on land set aside by the government for hiking and nature and so on. That land belongs to the people, I don't much see this piece as an anti-marijuana story.

Tijuana Warehouse Used as a Garbage Dump
Not even 1/2 mile from me here. A lot of the older warehouses aren't being leased anymore, I guess the owner thought he had found a temporary solution to generate some cash. Now he stands a chance of losing his property.

When Is a Sardine a Sardine?
They love them here in Mexico as well. Saltine crackers seems to be the carrier of choice. Head-on and not gutted, canned in a tomato sauce of some sort. I tried them and don't care for them, but that's just me.

Dr. Bill Lombardo and his GT LTS 3 surf Highway 101
Beano is not available here in Baja, Mr. Waddle. If it was, then buying a vial would be out of the question, apparently Beano is now only available in tablet form. It wouldn't much matter anyway, when you spend a couple of decades eating certain vegetables and legumes that are high in complex sugars, your own body will eventually begin to produce the enzymes necessary in order to break those down appropriately. It's like reading. If you read enough, I think your brain begins to process the complex conceits that writers sometimes use in order to convey their core message. I do have hope for you. You did, after all, manage to cram the words "flatulent" and "Beano" into a single comment. I can see a future Reader cover story right there, and I'm certain you'll figure out a way to insert the truth about bicycles and proper beach culture and acceptable diners in there somewhere. Have at it!

Very good comment.

Hikers stumble upon marijuana plantation in Cuyamaca State Park
I think this was a very good story, potentially any number of things could have gone wrong, and it was well-written in order to convey that message. For those who seem to be unhappy with the prospect of missing out on some good ganja and seem not at all pleased with any effort to yank the plants, consider it from another angle. Growing a nice herb garden in the privacy of your own back yard is far removed from invading a patch of Government-owned land (set aside for hikers and nature enthusiasts) and planting millions of dollars worth of a substance that the U.S. Government still considers illegal. If someone put me in charge of the world for about a day and a half, I would do everything I could to make all drugs legal, or at the very least decriminalize their use and possession (not because I think that drugs are a good idea, but because I don't think that any government should have the right to tell its people what they can or cannot ingest). However, the audacity of a criminal element to seize portions of local, State, or Federal land in order to profit from growing ANYTHING on that property should enrage even Cheech and Chong. It should make everyone a little bit angry. Your tax money is paying for some very bad people to line their pockets with cash in order to do a lot of harm to a lot of people in situations that have nothing at all to do with marijuana.

Hikers stumble upon marijuana plantation in Cuyamaca State Park
Another good observation.— February 15, 2012 2:14 p.m.
I'm sure that Daniel would be grateful.— February 15, 2012 1:42 p.m.
I just think that freedom is absolute.— February 14, 2012 12:58 a.m.

It's an honest question, not a rebuttal of your comment, but I'm curious if you're notching the DEA on the same level as perhaps the Department of Agriculture or the Homeland Security Department.— February 13, 2012 2:38 p.m.

That land belongs to the people, I don't much see this piece as an anti-marijuana story.— February 13, 2012 2:34 a.m.
Tijuana Warehouse Used as a Garbage Dump
Not even 1/2 mile from me here. A lot of the older warehouses aren't being leased anymore, I guess the owner thought he had found a temporary solution to generate some cash. Now he stands a chance of losing his property.— February 12, 2012 7:04 p.m.
When Is a Sardine a Sardine?
They love them here in Mexico as well. Saltine crackers seems to be the carrier of choice. Head-on and not gutted, canned in a tomato sauce of some sort. I tried them and don't care for them, but that's just me.— February 10, 2012 4:37 p.m.
Have at it!— February 10, 2012 12:16 a.m.

Your tax money is paying for some very bad people to line their pockets with cash in order to do a lot of harm to a lot of people in situations that have nothing at all to do with marijuana.— February 9, 2012 11:24 p.m.
