Build a stadium and Chargers will stay? Nope.
With all due respect, Petco is much more convenient to visit than was Qualcomm. I live in Baja, I've driven to both sites and taken public transportation to both sites, and the location of Petco Park is much more accessible. You can WANT Qualcomm to be a better option for whatever reason you wish, but it simply isn't. I completely understand the financial issues behind the stadium deals and why many are opposed, I get that part. But I fail to see how tossing Petco's location into the mix is somehow a contributing factor toward attendance or a lack of it. If this season's Padres played in Qualcomm it wouldn't make any difference because it isn't very entertaining watching a team that isn't winning and isn't expected to win. I talk with San Diego residents daily about why they attend or why they don't attend, and their answers are either attending because they are Padres fans regardless or not attending because of the poor quality of the product on the field. Location has never been mentioned once. Honestly.

Build a stadium and Chargers will stay? Nope.
The Padres average announced attendance per game is last in the National League, Michael. That has absolutely nothing to do with Petco Park, but I simply point out the fact. I believe there are six American League teams that lag behind the Padres. Seattle, Kansas City, Oakland, Chicago, Tampa Bay, and Cleveland. This data is current as of 5/2/12. If the Padres get an owner with deep pockets, then I believe this will change. But this year - because of the product on the field, not the park - attendance is not good.

Bring In the Fences? We Don't Need No Stinking Bringing in the Fences!
Brian, you're using metrics as though the Padres somehow compare offensively to all of the other clubs. They don't. Lowest payroll in MLB. The only true power hitter on this year's roster is Carlos Quentin, and he has yet to even play a game for the Padres. I understand your points, but if you really want to do it right then you would need to break down the Padres at every position and compare the position players to each other. On the other hand, Padres pitching has an advantage, not just at home but carrying THEIR confidence on the road. True hitters can hit, period. And the Padres have a bunch of guys who are gaps hitters. Headley, Denorfia, Alonso, Venable, those guys are built to hit down the lines and in the alleys. Same with a lot of their prospects. Gyorko, Spangenberg, Liriano, and so on. Those guys are not power hitters, and Quentin aside, not a single Padres player projects to hit 20 home runs no matter what you do with the fences. When pitchers keep the ball down in the zone, only the very best and strongest opposing hitter is going to be able to take a ball deep in that park to right and center field. If you're a small market team and your payroll is going to be less that $100 million per year, then you have to decide if you're going to have a team full of crappy pitchers or crappy hitters. The Padres will never have both good hitters and good pitchers unless some filthy-rich billionaire decides to buy the club and burn his money. Otherwise, it's a horrible business decision to have a $150 million dollar payroll in San Diego, it'll lose a lot of money. Look, you quote a guy like Jason Bartlett, he's not even batting .200 this season. That has nothing to do with the dimensions of Petco. Guys like Bartlett and Hudson aren't hitting because they are place-markers. Other players are simply pressing, guys like Maybin and Guzman, it isn't because the fences aren't brought in. They're flailing away at pitches in every park. Mine is not going to be the popular opinion. I don't mind that. But I also think that a guy like Jed Hoyer is far more brilliant than either of us, and he also did not like the idea of bringing in the fences. Not at Petco. Because in a small market, it's easier and more economical to field a team that fits your field. And you're going to have to tell me why guys like Heath Bell and Mat Latos are struggling this season playing elsewhere when they were nails playing for the Padres, I mean what more of a basis do you need? And have you watched Edinson Volquez pitch this season? I highly recommend interviewing some Padres pitchers, especially those that have come over here from other organizations. I bet that would at least get you to consider the argument from another angle, even if you are still convinced (as are most of the media that cover the Padres) that bringing in the fences is a good idea that might somehow fix the Padres.

Bring In the Fences? We Don't Need No Stinking Bringing in the Fences!
You and me, Dave. The thing we have in common is also with Jed Hoyer's philosophy, not a bad guy to share some smarts with. Jed believed that you take whatever advantage you can of your home park, especially as a small market team. I know he will serve the Cubs well, he did lots for the Padres before he was invited to leave town. We're in good company.

U-T
Saw Ryan Leaf as a Savior
Now you're plucking the low-hanging fruit, making fun of the lads who worked in the toy department. San Diego sports media is and has been notoriously spineless. Sort of like most all San Diego media is now. Easy pickin's there Don. In their defense, however, I point out that many high first-round draft picks have been complete busts (the Raiders are prime candidates for this every year). And for ImJustABill, Matt Bush was not THE first round PICK, he was chosen because Moores did not want to pay a true first rounder, he didn't want to pay Verlander's signing bonus. If you want more specifics on the Matt Bush drafting and signing, I'll be happy to oblige. And anything you read in here that I write negatively about Moores as an owner, you may point to this comment and you will get a foundation as to why Moores is a horrible MLB owner. That's the stadium issue and the development hoodwink aside, I will always leave that for Don. My opinion is based solely on Moores' lack of interest in having a viable minor league system to bring talent up.

The Tuscany of Baja, San Antonio Del Mar
First of all, 5 gallons of drinking/cooking water is around 30 pesos, not 50 cents, 30 pesos being around $2.50 at the moment. And San Antonio del Mar is not paradise, it has its issues, as does most of Baja. And the phrase isn't "perception is truth", rather, "perception is reality". Baja is what it is, and it isn't for everyone. While I will always disagree with Fulano de Tal's entirely negative view of this place, it is difficult to endorse your entirely positive view as well. I've only lived here for 20 years, but my eyes are wide open, I have no axe to grind either way. The reality, beyond perception, is that Baja is neither hell nor paradise, it's just a place. I love it, but I can't paint it as something it isn't. I can't recommend it and I can't warn anyone that it's some dangerous and evil place, because neither description would be accurate. In fact, the best way to describe anyplace in Baja is to simply describe it. The reader is very capable of drawing his or her own conclusions.

Bullfight Protest in Tijuana
Maybe they should protest at every taco stand in Tijuana. Then we can all make a documentary called, "Taqueros Si, Tacos No!" I would rather watch a bullfight than to watch cattle slaughtered. At least they get music and a crowd to cheer them on in the bull ring.

Joe Wieland Gets Major League Lesson
I know, I wasn't speaking in terms of who got the "win", simply which team won the game. By the way, in spite of the bad inning in the opener, Volquez has been outstanding. In the opening game, both Black and Volquez felt that the home plate umpire was pinching him, not giving him the outside corner. From my view in the press box, Volquez seemed to be nibbling at the corner and not quite getting it. Post-game, Buddy disagreed with me, Volquez, unlike Latos would have been, was not upset about it. If Volquez stays healthy, he could be the best thing on the Padres this season.

Smugglers Seek Qualified “Chauffeurs” to Deliver Dope
I believe that vehicle SENTRI card holders would not be allowed to pass through the SENTRI lane in any vehicle other than the one specified when they submitted the application. Unless they've changed the rules, car and driver are a pair, or they would have to use a normal lane. That alone would warrant suspicion should they drive through a normal lane and present a SENTRI card, based on the explanation as to why.

San Diego casinos don't like Christian card counters
Very interesting story, no idea where you find these. I can relate to it. I was never on any team, but well over 20 years ago when I was between wives and single, I did Vegas about every weekend, Vegas or Laughlin. And Shirley is right, counting is very simple, you just have to concentrate. I would stake around $40 and get up when I had between $500 and $1,000 so they were never suspicious. You play at the minimum tables. It usually takes about 2 - 3 hours to get there. I stopped after I met my wife.

Honestly.— May 4, 2012 6:13 p.m.
But this year - because of the product on the field, not the park - attendance is not good.— May 2, 2012 9:48 p.m.
I bet that would at least get you to consider the argument from another angle, even if you are still convinced (as are most of the media that cover the Padres) that bringing in the fences is a good idea that might somehow fix the Padres.— May 2, 2012 1:16 a.m.
We're in good company.— April 30, 2012 10:18 p.m.
U-T Saw Ryan Leaf as a Savior
My opinion is based solely on Moores' lack of interest in having a viable minor league system to bring talent up.— April 24, 2012 5:01 p.m.
The reader is very capable of drawing his or her own conclusions.— April 24, 2012 4:45 p.m.
Bullfight Protest in Tijuana
Maybe they should protest at every taco stand in Tijuana. Then we can all make a documentary called, "Taqueros Si, Tacos No!" I would rather watch a bullfight than to watch cattle slaughtered. At least they get music and a crowd to cheer them on in the bull ring.— April 24, 2012 4:07 p.m.
If Volquez stays healthy, he could be the best thing on the Padres this season.— April 15, 2012 9:42 a.m.
That alone would warrant suspicion should they drive through a normal lane and present a SENTRI card, based on the explanation as to why.— April 14, 2012 2:22 a.m.
I stopped after I met my wife.— April 11, 2012 2:35 p.m.
