Reader publisher makes in-kind advertising contribution to medical marijuana campaign
Hey Matt, me love you long time but the lead sucks, Holman's involvement in legal weed is tainted by advertising in the Reader. You could have led with something else and this would have been more stellar. Journalism. To hell with the check, do what's right. Great piece, but Jim didn't even have to be a part of it to make this work well, amigo.

Chargers give $12,000 to San Diego GOP; L.A. stadium builder AEG kicks in with $13,000 for Democrats
It could also spell a win for Ed Roski, who is sitting on ample land in the City of Industry complete with permission to build (including a waiver for the all-important Environmental Impact Report). Roski has been a generous donor to the Republican Party in years past, including this one. There is also talk that Roski may want to lure the Los Angeles Angels out of Anaheim and build a baseball park on the site.

Chula Vista Installs New Strip Club Regulations - UPDATE
My theory is that the City government in Chula Vista hates naked women. I'm expecting a new ordinance that requires all patrons to be issued Hefty bags to wear at all times upon entering the strip club. And, of course, there will be a two-laugh minimum.

Baja state police officer wounded in strip club shootout
To specify the location of the event, it wasn't technically "outside" of the Hong Kong Club. It was in a parking lot that is not affiliated with the club other than it's within a block of the joint and is often used by patrons of the place. And Visduh, I can yank plenty of similar stories in a 24-hour period in San Diego, so I'm failing to see your point about this not happening within a 20-mile radius of ANYWHERE in San Diego. Crime is not Tijuana specific (nor are shootouts or strip joints or much else for that matter).

Padres Make First Off-season Roster Moves
Agreed. Good kid. A tad undersized, but he has a big heart and decent defensive skills, at least so far as the arm is concerned. Hope he catches on with the Pirates organization.

Elizabeth from Acapulco and Frank from Tepic glad to be back in Mexico
How can there be "shock" at deportation without knowing the motivations for crossing in the first place, Joaquin? The human experience of migration dates back several decades and that wasn't in this piece, the perspective is lost when it becomes about some Mexican that paid a bunch of money to get over the big metal fence for unknown reasons. I'm not sure what Siobhan captured here, and I think my comment is entirely fair. It would be like writing a piece about WW-II and leaving out WW-I, the perspective surrounding why it ever happened in the beginning would be completely lost. Siobhan is a very capable writer, but this piece didn't settle well with me.
— October 19, 2012 2:11 p.m.
Elizabeth from Acapulco and Frank from Tepic glad to be back in Mexico
Respectfully, I was very disappointed in this piece, Siobhan. First, you blew the lead; precisely WHY did this gal want to come to the U.S? In other words, you might have been better off leading with the motivations and expectations vs. impressions and results. It has been my experience over the last 20 years here that the reasons most Mexicans cross are entirely misunderstood and generally neglected in media. "Encouraged" isn't a proper explanation. Second, it would have balanced the piece if you could have gotten some sort of an explanation and clarity of the deportation process from the U.S. authorities. Yes, they certainly do threaten to detain you for years if you fight deportation, but you skipped over their reasons for this and why it's legal for them to do so. This also asks the reader to make a moral judgement concerning the way their own country defines human rights and so on. In other words, there could have been other angles that would have lent clarity and balance to your own angle. If you do more pieces on Mexico, I encourage you to dig a little deeper. You are likely to discover tidbits that might surprise you but would certainly surprise the reader.

Tijuana’s Yellow Cabs in Peril?
The Yellow Cabs work with each other and take turns, they all work under the same syndicate and aren't exactly individual operators. This problem is caused by the closure of what was the main entrance on foot into Mexico, it has been moved to the other side of I-5 so there's no place for the cabs to queue as pedestrians enter Mexico.
— October 16, 2012 12:59 p.m.
New Chula Vista Comedy Club, Strip Club, What’s the Diff?
“...the nature of the business at the Bay Blvd. location has not been confirmed, Chula Vista Municipal Code requires a special live entertainment business license for exotic dance operations and prohibits nude or simulated nude demonstrations or exhibitions at such places.” What in the hell is a "simulated nude demonstration"? Do they wear clothing but pretend to be nude? That's the most convoluted thing I've heard in a long time. Are there bans on simulated alcohol, simulated food, simulated pornography? In other words, how does one go about demonstrating simulated nudity?
— October 11, 2012 3:57 p.m.
Nudie Bar Opens Across Street from Chula Vista’s Bayfront
I'm trying to figure out how this is going to morally corrupt the fine people of Chula Vista. It's just some place where girls make some cash and boys get to enjoy themselves. I think there is a Motel 6 right by this place, I'm sure more sordid events happen in some of those rooms than would happen in a strip joint. Someone school me on this, I'm all ears (well, actually eyes, but you know what I mean). One point of view could be that these types of establishments actually keep the raging hormones of the male species of humans off of the streets where they could find more trouble lurking out there than in some club where ostensibly at least a few of the girls are going to use some of that lap-dance money to get an education. Odd as it might seem, it's sort of easy to point out a few positives here. And it's economics 101, the perfect example of creative destruction - close down an overrated seafood joint and give the people some entertainment that they seem to want.

Great piece, but Jim didn't even have to be a part of it to make this work well, amigo.— November 4, 2012 6:16 p.m.
There is also talk that Roski may want to lure the Los Angeles Angels out of Anaheim and build a baseball park on the site.— November 3, 2012 1:43 p.m.
Chula Vista Installs New Strip Club Regulations - UPDATE
My theory is that the City government in Chula Vista hates naked women. I'm expecting a new ordinance that requires all patrons to be issued Hefty bags to wear at all times upon entering the strip club. And, of course, there will be a two-laugh minimum.— November 2, 2012 1:19 p.m.
Crime is not Tijuana specific (nor are shootouts or strip joints or much else for that matter).— November 1, 2012 1 p.m.
Padres Make First Off-season Roster Moves
Agreed. Good kid. A tad undersized, but he has a big heart and decent defensive skills, at least so far as the arm is concerned. Hope he catches on with the Pirates organization.— October 27, 2012 6:29 p.m.
Siobhan is a very capable writer, but this piece didn't settle well with me.— October 19, 2012 2:11 p.m.
You are likely to discover tidbits that might surprise you but would certainly surprise the reader.— October 17, 2012 12:30 p.m.
Tijuana’s Yellow Cabs in Peril?
The Yellow Cabs work with each other and take turns, they all work under the same syndicate and aren't exactly individual operators. This problem is caused by the closure of what was the main entrance on foot into Mexico, it has been moved to the other side of I-5 so there's no place for the cabs to queue as pedestrians enter Mexico.— October 16, 2012 12:59 p.m.
In other words, how does one go about demonstrating simulated nudity?— October 11, 2012 3:57 p.m.
And it's economics 101, the perfect example of creative destruction - close down an overrated seafood joint and give the people some entertainment that they seem to want.— October 9, 2012 5:24 p.m.
